One of the coolest things on cars I have ever seen at a museum was an actual engineering dept layout on a 50 Chevy car fender. It was life size and had the dimensions of the fender and every single curve and stuff on it so it could be made using that flat piece of paper for reference! Never saw anything like it being I am not an educated dude, this was new to me and fascinating. I don't remember where it was, some little tiny museum on interstate 40 or New Mexico or Kansas I don't have a clue. But damn I wish I had gotten a photo of it at least.

That's how it was done until computers came along. Every part, every layout, every design study, every tool was reduced to two dimensions on paper.

After Truck Engineering was kicked out of Chevy Central Office (in the early 1980's, maybe) we were scattered to a dozen different little engineering houses throughout Southeast Michigan. If you needed to look at a drawing you first had to figure out which job shop it was located in, and then you had to hop in your car and drive over there (to Northfield, or Clawson, or Modern Engineering) and then try to find the drawing either in the cubby hole where it was kept, or in use on someone's desk or drawing table.

Now we can just pull it up from the convenience of your laptop, whether at your desk or from the comfort of your barcalounger, in 3D. Much nicer (and naturally more efficient).

Still do. It will be 40 years in June.

I started as a co-op student (GMI = General Motors Institute) at the Flint Truck assembly plant. Since then I've worked in about 12 different final assembly plants, two proving grounds, three pre-production shops and one remote self contained design/build operation, in production launch, product design/development, and engineering program management.

I've worked on 6 generations of Full Size Trucks (Squarebody, GMT400, GMT800, GMT900, K2 and T1) one electric vehicle (Volt) and one low volume show car type build that I can't talk about.

OMG am I jealous! I wanted so bad to do that stuff when I was a kid, my dad was a Buick salesman from when I was born until I was out of highschool. I don't know why I didn't pursue it, I had a GM plant 8 miles from my house for goodness sakes. But I fell into autobody and did that instead. But damn that is some cool stuff, you have some awesome memories I am sure.

You're welcome, it made my day too, what a great photo! I was glad I could find exactly where it was taken. Looks like it's changed a LOT, the hotel is gone from what I can figure out.

Oh yeah, look at the brick street, it's been removed! There is a little section of it left probably as a "memory" of the old street. Crap I hate seeing those changes! It happens so much. I know right here in my city just blocks from my house is the old movie theater and stuff on what was called "main street" has changed so much. My parents had a restaurant after the war right there by the theater. My sister tells stories of being 5 year old and crossing main street to go to a store to buy candy. Well, that store, along with the whole block is being torn down to put in a 3 - 5 story apartment building! When I was a kid the Honda Shop was there that I bought parts for my C-110 50. The old firehouse is there where I remember fire trucks coming out of with the firemen standing on the rear of the truck (remember that?) all that will be gone! I pass them on the sidewalk on my evening walk over the last number of years, all of it will be gone.
