Left the camera at home, so the audio is off my cell phone.. Bare with the poor quality. The truck sounds like a BEAST, open headers is a dream... But now the truck breathes through a set of dual 2 and 1/4 inch exhausts, and through a pair of mystery turbo muffles.. The truck sounds great, nice, rumbling idle, but with a great bark when you get on the gas.. so to speak. Thanks guys! Its a beast. Can't wait to get back over, and play with it more love hearing it run now.
Next up is to jack the engine up, and move the trans cooler lines. We accidently routed them through the frame-motor-mount, and they hit the headers. Then a set of 90* spark plug boots. And, top off the tranny fluid. Then, gotta figure some sort of fan/shroud idea. Check and clean the gas tank, and may be able to get a test drive with in a month or so. Also going to try my best to make it to the houston meet. |

Got some work today, good and bad news.
The good, got just about everything but the trans-cooler lines cleared of the headers, and the spark plug wires done. The full, true duel 2 1/4 exhaust. With the pipes dumping right behind the tires, burnouts are gonna look sweet with the smoke being blown outwards by the exhaust Also, thanks to another Cadillac Freebie, got a clock that fits in the extra gauge hole in the cluster (from the factory, it was an option for a vacuum gauge). Bad news is, one of the spark plugs decided to break. So no firing today. Maybe tomorrow. :bigwink: |

Strange...you have a Dana rear axle under there! If it is a 6-lug semi-floater it is probably a Dana 44. Not sure if you knew or not, but they are pretty rare underneath 1/2 ton trucks. Not any better or worse than a 12-bolt really, but more rare as a rear axle in a Chevy truck. Nice progress too, BTW.

Nope, it's a Dana 60 (back a page I think I have the pic of the ID stamp). Rare, yes.. But these trucks were so varied, I'm not surprised (but happy it's near bullet proof, lol). Like the other guy on here who just found out his truck has a powerglide trans.

Your truck is looking great, Looks to me like you have a totally soid truck that you can keep for a long time.
Just a small piece of advice, I put togeahter a 70 short bed when I was in highschool, it was a really rad truck, Black, 4x4, and not a day goes by that I dont miss that thing, I would highly sugjest that you never sell your truck, you have a totally soild nice old chevy on your hands. Treat it right and it will serve you well for years and years to come. And on that note, since you have it all put togeather, you going to make it to Austin on the 5th?

I don't plan on selling this til it either rusts back into the earth, or my cold dead hands (or maybe just put my casket in the bed, and burry the whole truck 6-feet-under ). I've watched my dad have to sell off his two high-school mean machines ('74 Camaro, a real beast, walked all over trailered cars at the strip, and drove home. And his '78 El Camino, was JUST about to get a TPI 350 built to around 400hp, 700R4, etc, then a guy hit-and-ran, totalling it while parked) and I still miss them so much, grew up with them. Couldn't let this one get away. March 5th? Unless I can come up with enough money for a power steering pump, shoulder belts, and disks brakes ASAP, it's not ready for the road. Just what I need til' my dad will let this thing on the road for more then a (soon) trip around the block. Care to donate? lol Are you hitting up the houston meet? Just a bit of an update anticipating to better future ones.
-Been working on wiring. Added a fuse block right off the battery. Uses modern Maxi-fuses. The original positive to the truck runs off this. Then other accesories, and the 2ndary fuse block we add (keeping new wiring separate from original is the goal) is ran off this too. Re-wiring the truck to use the newer style alternators. Tomorrow I might get onto re-doing the fuel lines. Then, maybe find an excuse to drive the truck to the gas station to fill the whole thing up, after checking the tank for leaks and rust. Today:
Got an early start, and dropped down the starter and fabbed up some heat shields for the starter and solenoid (protects them from the heat off the headers). Got a fan shroud from my dad's friend (trading for the fuelpump that came with the truck), and it'll fit with some cutting and trimming. And oh the joys of the fuel system. To clean out the gas tank, we put in about 3 gallons. At the bottom of the tank, the fuel line ran to a pot to collect the dirty gas. Then at the top, my dad used the leaf blower to start the flow of fuel (siphon effect) by blowing air down the filler neck. Problem was, once the fuel started flowing, the siphon effect didn't stop, and gas kept going. Brown, dirty, stinky, gas! So anyways, I plug the fuel line with my finger (after it has already overflown the pot with dirty gas), and my dad goes off to get a bolt to plug the fuel line. Nothing like getting soaked in dirty gasoline So anyways, plug off the line, change shirts, and went onto cleaning out the hard lines. Clammed the gas tank line, and ran the new rubber line to the hard fuel line (runs the length of the frame rails). Started it up, and now the truck runs entirely on it's own gas! Also rebuilt the alternator with another regulator out of a spare alternator that was lying around. But, that regulator is worn out, and the alternator doesn't quite charge right, so until that's fixed, the truck is still driveway bound. BUT, ladies and gents, boys and girls, just have to fix that alternator. Tidy up a few things here and there. And this big ol' beast will take it's maiden voyage! |

Welp, so much for the test drive idea. My dad wants to pull the tank out, and really give it a good cleaning (too expensive to run tanks of gas through just to clean it). The tank still has varnish in it. So that's this weekend's project. |

At a delima, my '90 Firebird is becoming a slow money pit at the moment, with 257,000 miles. But, I need to get it going to get a job (local neighborhood stores seem full-up, and everybody is too good for teens to mow lawns). Trying to get that thing going so I can get the job and get cash, possibly sell the car, and then bust ass on the truck for a few weeks and have it done. Picked up some cool old vintage stuff from my great-grandmothers:

Got a good bit of work done on it today. Custom made a fan-shroud support and filler panel. Ghetto-bent the angle into it... By sandwhiching it between 2x4s, and using the wieght of the truck to hold them down (lifted the rear tire, put the stack under it, lowered the truck onto the stack), then using pry-bars at 1st, and then onto other 2x4s, bent the angle into the aluminum.
Viola: ^Also worked it into a brushed-aluminum finish. :p How we're sittin' at the moment. Still some mystery alternator issues, and then to pull the gas tank out and give it a good cleaning to get the varnished gas out, and it aught to be up for a test drive. Need a job... |
