Mo, Sounds like a great trip and alot of fun. Nice truck too. Here are some suggestions; Monument Valley, Petrified Forest/Painted Desert, Bryce Canyon, and of course The Grand Canyon.

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

Hi guys. I want to thank everyone who has encouraged and guided us. I promise to clean up the posts and add pics of the trip and Caroline as soon as I get home. Last night we rolled in to the south rim of the grand canyon. It was a long drive, needless to say. We didn't find a camp ground right away but got some rest and got to see Lipton point before sunrise. The English language or any other language for that matter does not contain enough words to describe the grandest of all canyons. Tony had never seen it and neither had Caroline. This was a mandatory mission and one that was well worth the detour.
Sleeping cots were laid next caroline and we ended up, unknowingly, being 20 ft from the edge of this magnanimous site. We took pictures, hike a bit, checked fluid levels and an annoying little squeal out of the power steering pump that since then has disappeared and went on the road in search of an old friend... The 89A. We are now in Sedona eating a 14 dollar turkey burger catching up in some football and thinking of skipping Vegas and heading strait to Joshua tree.
I can't wait for you guys to see some of the pics . My apologies but I will deliver!

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

Msgross: I was looking through CL and called the p.o. I guess it was just luck.

Let's see, we left from Sedona and decided to head home and head towards Phoenix Az and take the 10 into California.
Doing this was perhaps the worst decision of the whole trip. Crossing the Sonora desert in the middle of the day when it's 104 degrees in a vintage truck w/o air conditioning was not very smart.
Tony and I began to feel homesick and it's such a short distance that we felt a bit cavalier. Caroline was put through the test once again and performed flawlessly. The temp gauge barely lifted and pushed going 65-70 no problem.
Having a cup full of ice water and strategically placing it in between your lap was an absolute must! It was hotter than Africa, as the saying goes.
Our intent was to camp out at Joshua tree but the plan changed and we pushed through all the way to the central coast. We arrived home smelling like vinager and musk and the wife told me to sleep on the couch. It was 2 am and I had no energy left to even take a shower.
This morning, the wife went to work leaving a fresh pot of coffee brewed for tony and I and we got to chatting about the trip.
It came down to a simple word... Amazing! So many stories, people, places and it all started because of this truck and the hard time I was getting having it shipped here!
I will upload pictures tonite and do a timeline of the trip. Throw in question and comments as we go. I think it will be a good read and hopefully you'll find the pictures and stories inspirational.
Thanks for sitting in the middle seat through this small journey.
Mo, Tony and Caroline.

More to come later

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

Well guys thanks for your patience..heres the initial set of images.
this is Caroline sitting cozy in her barn in central North Carolina. We loaded up our gear that I had shipped from California which included sleeping bags, camping gear, tools and anything i thought would be useful along the way.
For those who kept up with us this maybe a bit repetitive so i'll let the images sort of speak for themselves and if questions come up I can answer them as we go along. Thanks

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

Mo -- you probably need to compress your pictures down a bit.

Do you have Microsoft Picture Manager?

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

Chances are the iPhone pics will be 1600x1200. I think that's the default.

That picture will probably be ~1.5Mb or so .. or more. you'd want to take the pictures into an editor of some kind and compress them down to about 300k or that range. 1024KB = 1MB So, you can see where a size limitation would throw errors. For the most part when you upload pics to the site they will need t obe stored somewhere on the web server. Admins do this to save space, imagine all the pictures that are on this site.

Resolution / Quality will also make the image size larger. (not assuming you don't know, just trying to help)

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

I'm assuming you have downloaded the pics to your computer from the iPhone .....using the standard .jpeg format.

If you haven't, try doing that to your computer's desktop, then posting a normal post.... and go to "Manage Attachments".
Try uploading only one pic to the post for the test.

No logical reason for it not to work.

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

I upload everything to photobucket, then copy and paste the IMG link to this website... much easier

sounds like a great trip... not many west coasters stealing trucks from the east coast, most trips go the other way!

MO,

Loved reading through your story. I have spent most of my entire 20's in the desert in the military or as a contractor. Sometimes I can't stand the thought of missing out on stuff like this. One day I tell myself. Thanks for letting so many of us live vicariously through you. By the way my sister went to UCSB and I grew up in Cerritos. Lived in North Carolina from when I was 18 until 24. Awesome state. Wish you could have gone to the Outer Banks or Asheville.

Re: 1968 CST SWB anniversary gold

ScottG, you're the man! had a great time meeting and look forward to talking to you soon...you got my number.

helocrewchief; that's exactly what i'm talking about! My line of work i get to see some really crappy things that happen to people. perhaps the worst thing is to be in a condition which does not allow to take direction of your own life. We all have jobs, family and hundreds of obligations that sometimes limit or prevent us from doing crazy, wild things like buying a truck sight unseen and flying across the country to meet a guy that you only spoke to a number of times and take a chance and drive and see this awsome world we live in. well, i would be lying if i said i wasn't skeptical and even a bit stressed about taking this trip. But i would do it again in a second! The places I saw, the people I met and the time of introspection and reflection was worth the stress and the gamble.
BTW im working on uploading these damn pictures and give you guys some details and stories that i think all of you will find interesting.
thanks for the patience.
