Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Thanks, I'd like to see some pictures of your ride also. I still need to cut out rust on doors/rocker panels and put in new cab corners next. I just need to cut it all open and get at it. I am leary of tackling it but it can't be any harder than cutting my box all up, I think I worry too much LOL, instead of just getting off my arse and tackling it. Also I know everyone likes to look at pictures but comments sure go a long way to keep us all motivated. If it wasn't for this site I'm sure all these projects would all collect alot more dust.

Looks great, keep up the work.
I was thinking of switching mine from a LWB to a SWB, but am just enjoying driving it for now. Surprising how much a $650 initial investment can bring a smile to your face.

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Just go slow and believe it or not, cutting out a $30 rocker will make the floor/support/cab corner easier to repair in the long run. What ever you do just make sure to hang the door before final fit of the new bits

Thanks for the advice Tony, the passenger side rocker is good, but the driver side rocker will be coming out for sure.

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
It took about 10 hours just to cut out the rust and weld in new tin.
![]() ![]() I am putting on Por15 and seam sealing both sides and that should stop the rust. Actually once I got going I didn't want to stop!!!! ![]()

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Rear cab support is done on passenger side and rear floor peice is installed. Just need the cab corner welded in now.
![]() I should also look for a new jack to install in the above picture now that there is actually a place for it instead of a great big rust hole. ![]()

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Just a reminder of what was rusted in the corner
![]() This now has new cab support underneath then a rear floor section welded in. ![]() Then I cut out a nice area aroung the rust, then I placed new cab corner over top and traced and then cut a little bigger than needed, set back on and kept trimming till it was just right and spot welded in. I am glad I did it. I was going to hire it for fear I would make a mess out of it but It turned out good, and probably saved about $500. Now just the drivers side left. ![]()
