Another quick update...
Got the bracket fabbed up for the gas tank. Luck would have it, no one around has gas tank straps, so i ordered some from Tanks Inc. In the meantime i'l look to get the pump and sender installed. Stay tuned... |

Straps came in last night so I got the tank in. Just to refresh, its the 68-69 camaro tank mentioned a few posts back (again thanks Advanced Design and Dwcsr for the great pics on your builds).
Man i really like this tank! It really tucks up nice! Not bad for an 18 gallon tank. I'll work on the sender and in-tank pump over the weekend and start looking at fuel lines. I really like Earls (Holley) Pro Lite 350 hose but @ almost $9/ft...yikes. I'll probably just go with their super stock hose. It's getting closer to body work...Stay tuned! |

As much as i would like to get fancy and come up through the fender, I don't trust my body work abilities, so i'll just come up through the bed. Of course I may have to find a kitchen sink adapter... funny story... I got the pump in but i'm not happy with the sock at the end of it, just seemed a little cheap and didn't like my gorilla hands messing with it. So in one of the processes of test fitting it, the sock fell off the pump and behind the baffle. Great. On top of that, the duct tape on the end of the little jig i was trying to fish it out with fell off too, so now i have the sock and a wad of duct tape behind the baffle. So as i'm debating of having to drop my newly installed tank to jimmy them out, I call my 8yr old daughter over (the one pictured a few pages back) to see if her hands are small enough to reach in. Success! She was able to grab both with no trouble at all. So got the pump in but ended up jacking up the sending unit so i'll need a new one of those. The moral of the story...make sure you have your youngest kid or grandkid so they fish out stuff with their small hands. On the hose, I think i'm going to look at Summit Racing. they look to have a pretty good deal going on. Stay tuned... |

Do you have a Parker Store in your area
They have some nice SS braded PTFE fuel line and 37* fittings with a little bit of silver soldering involved Can you get a filler neck come out the rear by the license plate or behind it?

I had never heard of Parker Store, so did a search and they're out on the east coast, so probably won't work. It might be possible to run a filler neck out the back. Ok! Today's update will be photo journal day!!!
When we left things off I had to get the pump and the sender installed and I got those in last week, but i got pics this weekend. I know, real exciting, one of my dogs smiling for the camera. So as i was researching hoses for the tank, I was also taking a good look at brake lines and how they'd be routed and looking at how the exhaust is going to route around the brake frame bracket and yes...Build Direction Change!!! As much as I want to keep the frame bracket w/under floor pedals, there's a lot of tight real estate under there I came to the conclusion that i'm going with firewall mounted w/ s10 pedal bracket w/clutch pedal. I found a good deal on ebay and Skymangs has a nice callout how to install. Plus, I get to use my orginal headers, and finding hoses for the hydroboost and clutch slave will probably be a little easier but I digress... So if i'm going this route, I need to get some work done on the cab so i can get it on the frame and then I can go from there. So now we begin! |

If you look at the first pic this is what the cab looked like when I pulled it off last fall. Someone in Charlotte's formal life decided to fill much of the firewall holes with bondo and what looked like the stuff you patch drywall and then do an 'interesting' coat of undercoating on the firewall. Pic 2 is with most of the firewall cleaned up. You notice someone had a firewall booster on the truck at sometime, plus some chewed up real estate where the steering column went. It's because of these previous design choices, i'll probably be taking the whole truck down to metal come paint prep time even though she was already in primer when i got her. Just don't know what's underneath.

I've known for a while that I was going to need to address the passenger inner cowl. I already dug out a good amount of dirt and there's some other damage near the body mount and up into the bottom of the inner fender but its pretty light. I've said it before we're spoiled w/ west coast trucks. The first pic i was already aware of. Now the driver's side actually looked pretty intact, but there seemed to be a bunch of dirt packed in there, so I did the old screwdriver test to see how intact it actually was...Pic 2 is when I got done w/the screwdriver and wire wheel...glad I decided to check. It was actually worse than the passenger side but it looks like this is where the rust was located.
Pics 3 & 4 represent with the rot cut out to good metal and copius amounts of rust treatment sprayed inside! You can see how much dirt was stuck up both sides. Now that I think about it the passenger side had as much if not more all told. |

Once I got done with those, I took a good hard look at that hole where the old booster was...well I was in a patching mood!
Pic 1, I cut out the old booster hole with the adjacent bolt holes. Ok, before y'all ask, "You're going with a firewall mounted booster, why didn't you keep it?"... 1st, if you look, it wasn't the best install in the first place and would take some work to dress it up to spec, at least where i'd be satisfied. 2nd, i'm probably going to move the column to be center under the gauges so the hole would need to be moved anyway so going this route probably save me some time in the end. Pic 2, patch cut, fit and stitched in. I did the forms by hand on the vice. not exact, but I like my handywork. Pic 3, with things somewhat smoothed out. |

Last update of the day, I promise!!!
Pic 1 Firewall mostly done. I'll need to fill in the pedal holes and figure out what i'm going to do with the steering column hole, or better yet how to fix. Pic 2, since my first dog got in, i had to get one with both. Great dogs. they're littermate sisters and we've had both since they were pups. So I got a lot done this wknd and I feel like I can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and no its not a train! The inner cab corner on the driver's side needs to be addressed, both outer cab corners are fine. Plus the work on the floors with some kind of trans hump (hussey gave me a great idea). Oh yeah, i forgot to mention, but prior to starting al this work, I had to fight to get the original Z bar out. That took about an hour as well! I'm starting to plan the exhaust, plumbing and fabbing up pedals and the rest on the interior... Stay tuned... Last edited by iowaboynca; 07-31-2016 at 09:55 PM. |
