Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
Wolfthing- I searched them and came up with some companies that i doubt u were talkign about... what do they build? I am always looking for new careers and such since this hobby is too expensive.. I currently and froze on the project due to finances and I am in need of the rear wheels and 3rd member and axles...
If someone could help with a sponsorship for the wheels it would be much appreciated

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
layedoutnoma, try http://www.halliburton.com and that shoud be it. A google search for halliburton and it is the first one that comes up. Go to upper right where it says careers and click that and then there will be choices, click on skilled crafts or craft technical or search them all and there is probably a 1000 jobs or more.
These guys get the big government contracts for oil search and drilling. They are world wide. BIG company. BIG pocket books,!!!!! |

If I were needing work right now , I would be on their door step!! Meanwhile I am a team leader for overhaul/maintenance/machining for www.ericksonaircrane.com. check em out for a 10,000 HP twin engine heavy lift helicopter VietNam era military converted for industrial lift and aerial firefighting(one of the finest). BLOW YOUR SOCKS OFF!! Will flatten a man to the ground under the Rotor wash upon lift off. Will beat a F-16, vertical lift to elevation, hands down. Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
I have some constructive criticism for you. I love the concept, but one thing in paticular concerns me. The angle between the rear bags and the lever is on the verge of being to big (almost straight) as pictured, and it looks like the rearend and bags have some travel left in them to go even lower making that angle worse. As you get closer to 180 degrees the loss of mechanical advantage per degree change is exponential.
Hopefully you can read the text in these pics. When I saved them as JPEGs the resolution dropped pretty bad on the text... |

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
As Frizzle Fry and Rockrln have stated, it might be a good idea to tweak the design on the rear bags a bit. The bag will want to flex and cause some definite headaches if not resolved in this early stage. The only way to use a bag in this type of design, and have good results (that I have found) is to add another piece linkage that will keep the bag from wanting to move around too much. It's a little difficult to explain in words so I have attached a pic of a set-up I did a little while back. The bags are mounted horizontally, but you can get the idea. It took a while to get it to where I was finally happy with how it functioned. (the linkages in the pic are all unfinished pieces, but the angles and measurements are correct).
Don't take this as being negative... your talents are OBVIOUS.

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
Frizzle fry- Thank you very much for the diagrams- Those cantilever brackets are actually just mockups as I will hav new ones cnc made once i changed the specs on them.. same deal with the fronts also. I wish i could get shockwaves but unless air ride tech wants to do a sponsorship I won't be able to afford them. This forum isgret cause no one else has addressed the issue of dual flex points where i thought i may have an issue. But yes i will def need to change the bag mounts of the front and rear...
porter- i have been very impressed with the work i have seen from you and i don't take anything as being nagative.. Could u please post closer pics of that last setup since its hard to see from the pics. I understand exactly what u guys have adressed and i am very thankful that you are helping my setup. Also if anyone has a connection with shockwaves or 20x16" wheels please contact me... I will have a render out soon to help with sponsorships and if i can get some help here it will be at SEMA 07

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
wouldnt had spotted that untill it was time to operate the truck .
on the verge of me being called stupid here lets try another hearbrain idea dunno if this will work : wouldnt it be possible to slant the rearbags towarth the rear on the bottom mount (the mounts on the other side of the beam on wish they are mounted now ) and make them pivot , i think it will be pretty mush in a straight line with the forces working on the bag and the swing of that beam on top i havent seen the bags before and dont know if they have some sort of sliding thing inside to prevent them from bending out .

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
I like that solution Porter. To use that design he would need to add not only the "stabilizer link" (as I will call it), but also another link between the upper bag mount and the lever arm. Otherwise it will form a triangle that won't move.

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
Something like this. And make the post coming off the bag mount as short as possible.

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
BINGO Frizzle! Except I wouldn't paint all the linkage red!
You would also want the "stabilizer link" perpindicular to the bag at ride-height.

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
If you don't mind me asking but did you guys go to school for this kind of stuff. You seem to know quite abit about suspension and it is something I am interested in learning more about.

As for the suspension... A Mechanical Engineering degree would be helpful... or you could do what I did and purchase every book you can find on suspension geometry, design, and kinematics... and read them over and over and over again until you understand what all the big words mean. Then you buy a computer program, or two, or three, or... (you get the point ) that you can model suspension designs in and learn what effects are caused by different alterations. Then before you actually start trying out your designs, become a qualified welder (so your stuff doesn't break and kill people). Formal education is mostly a good thing, but there are driven individuals who can attain as good as or even better of an education through hard work and determination. It is usually easier when you have a trained, experienced professional in front of you to explain stuff you don't understand... but it's not the only way.

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
Awesome looking fab skills; I appreciate the "outside-the-box" design you are using.
I have one question about your Watts link; is there a pivot between your links, on top of the rearend housing? I could not tell from the picture posted. If there is no pivot point between the links, when the suspension is completely compressed, won't it try to push the frame rails apart? |

Can anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages to that suspension setup and where it would most likely be used. Also any links to sites would be great. Also nice truck!

Re: Project Thread:Nothin Normal
Thanks Frizzle, that's why I asked about it, I couldn't tell from the pictures posted if there was a pivot point and that set-up is very different from all of the Watt's links I've seen prior to this; every one that I've seen before has been mounted to the back side of the diff with one link high to one side and the other side low to the opposite side. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this build and the new twists in engineering that show up. |
