Re: The Wrecker Is Home
I prefer the 205 but......here is the choices.
203 is for a full time front axle. But,you can get a convert kit if you want to run lockouts on the front end.Which I prefer to use. The 208 is a 80s model. You might have to use a different front driveshaft. The 208 is alot lighter. They dont have to be converted to part time 4wd like the 203. I believe that he has a 205/Th350 there, thats what I would choose.I would beef up the tranny if I was going with a turbo 350 though. It all depends on what all you plan to do with the truck, and if you want lockouts, etc Last edited by 1969k10stepside; 05-30-2007 at 05:04 PM. Re: The Wrecker Is Home
Dropped a 6 cyl. down into the Wrecker to Make sure that Wrecker Part's would work before going to all the work of swapping it over to the 4x4 Frame. When cranking the Motor over the Driveshaft is Turning with the Tranny in Nuetral , Could that be something to do with the PTO for the Wrecker Bed or Have i screwed something up???
Fuel Pump was Bad & Was only able to get it to start with starting Fluid, Got a new Pump in it but hav'nt tried starting till i have some info on the Driveshaft turning, Once Motor is running, What Step's would be needed to Check out the PTO for Wrecker Bed??? Thanks, Rick

Re: The Wrecker Is Home
I did a Google Search & Apparently Driveshaft Rotation in Neutral it is nothing to Worry about, Here are a Couple Quote's that i Found on Subject on message Board's.............
Drive Shaft Spinning while in Neutral (1) While in Neutral the input shaft inside the trans is still spinning. With the drive wheels off the ground the gears inside the trans are spinning on roller bearings. With no drag they will kinda freewheel letting them turn some making the output shaft turn as well. There is nothing wrong, I've seen it a thousand times over the years, don't worry about it. (2) its resistance in the transmission. Your gears ride the output shaft on bearings, and when there is no resistance at the wheels the small amount of resistance in the bearings will get the output shaft spinning. Can anybody tell me what to expect with the PTO, Do u Just engage it & Then Control Motion with the Lever's at the Back of Wrecker Bed? Thanks, Rick

Re: The Wrecker Is Home
Wreckers usually have the winch control either direction of the wire pull. So you only need a one way PTO in that case.
My Holmes winch is such a model and I just engage the PTO then go to back of truck and can have the cable go in or out via the lever. Some have a free wheelking option too so you can just splool the cable out when winching from the rubarb. Some bigger and older winches use a two way PTO, and you need to unwind or pull the cable either way by switching the direction via the pto.

Re: The Wrecker Is Home
Here's a brochure on that Holmes 480 of yours. Kind of handy just so you know the specs on it.
http://zips.com/images/brochures/480%20mechanical.pdf $500 for that 1-ton w/ Holmes 500 was a heck of a deal as well. Great looking trucks, I hope to watch updated progress on them. Last edited by 1972CheyenneSuper; 03-30-2008 at 02:05 AM. |
