Re: Ugly Betsy.
I decided to drop the junk chrome oil pan after two attempts of sealing it. I decided of a re useable one piece gasket from Summit. I'm just waiting for the new polished alum pan. Yippie.

Re: Ugly Betsy.
I tried using one of those one piece gaskets on my '79 Camaro's 350. After taking all the time to use a torque wrench on all of the pan bolts, that thing would leave an oil ring in the shape of the oild pan on the ground after 45 minutes of being parked. After fighting with it a few times, I finally yanked it out and went back to cork and haven't had a leak since. I really do hope you have better luck with yours.
Cool pickup by the way. Last edited by fryer1979; 06-09-2010 at 10:48 PM. |

I hope it works out too. The cork/rubber thing did not work out very well for me. I rest most of the blame on the chrome pan. I made sure the new pan requires a thin front rubber seal before I bought the gasket. Keep your fingers crossed!!

Not sure if it's a good idea yet. I may loosen the clamps and turn them in towards the driveline. I dont them nuts hanging down (No pun intended, lack of better wording). Anyone know if doin so would be a mistake or not?

Re: Ugly Betsy.
Installed the oak. At this point I can't stress enough. Count the fasteners before you sign for them. There should be exactly five million of them. I would suggest counting them several times. I hope I didn't scare you. That's a combined total of four different fasteners. I did not remember the '71 so labor intensive. I guess I chose to forget. I spent eight hours on it today. Most were on the creeper. Had I known I'd be spending so much time on it I would have put sheets on It looks pretty fair so far.

Re: Ugly Betsy.
The bed looks great. I still get a kick out of seeing it in your sun room, not a garage or shop.

Re: Ugly Betsy.
Very close for sure. It does almost look good. I'm happy with it's stance. It does not have the 3/4 ton rake going on anymore. I used 1/2 ton lowering coils which netted around a 3/6 drop. Thanks

Re: Ugly Betsy.
Man, seeing all that work makes me tired. Great work and great progress. Now, I'm re-thinking going to the gym and going home and getting my bed in the garage for more sanding. Keep the pics coming.

Re: Ugly Betsy.
Most of the day was dedicated to electrical. I was only able to get the headlights working. No running lights, no horn or dash lights.. ect.

Re: Ugly Betsy.
Great build you have going, i like the show case shop you have there!
Just FYI if you use a grinder on the gasket side of that oil pan and rough it up really good it will never leak again, its the chrome that wont allow it to seal up ![]() |
