The shipping from LMC is faster than anything I have ordered for the truck so far, BUT I haven't even opened the box to check the parts.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
What's a good way to cut rust pieces off the cab? I want to start on the body work soon and could use any advice you give me, this is my first bodywork job also so I'll have to ask around for advice maybe yet.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Cut straight lines with a cut-off wheel. Try not to bend up the old pieces too bad, then you can use them as a template to trace for the new pieces. And, I always make sure to get all of the rust, but don't cut off any more than you have to.

I also heard something about using another plate in the back or something to make it stronger and then later grind that all smooth, is that necessary or not?

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
I would only butt weld the patches in. no overlapping metal and welding, you are inviting the rust to come back. if you need cab support etc. you can drill holes in the replacement piece and floorpans to plug weld (simulates a spot weld) them together.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
FINALLY some updates, got some parts in:
Dropmember And a Pro-plus front disc brake kit, first of a kind on these trucks, it's a 6 piston caliper on 14 inch rotors slotted and drilled The rear brakes are already at the place where I'm getting the axle coverted to 5-lug and rebuilt with eaton posi. I took 2 useless temporary crossmembers off my frame and welded one in the front, maybe can't see too good in the picture below, but that's about it for updates now, hope to be all at it again in about 3 weeks when I'm done school. Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Finally some progress again, I'm hoping to get the 4-link bars, rear bag mounts, and all the rest of the rear bracing finished by the end of the week, and then I need to order the fuel cell and air tanks to put them on there, and hopefully soon I'll get a hold of the money to finish my engine and get the tranny and then put them in there with the exhaust and make sure I have some space for the air lines and the wiring. Enough talk, here's the pics!
Got the dropmember tacked on, a-arms and spindles and wheels on... Some stuff in the rear, still need more on the sloping up part, what you think? And a small idea of what the rolling chassis might look like: Any ideas for extra bracing anywhere would be aprreciated, I think I have it all planned out for the rear, but I'll look over any ideas. Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Nice! I agree with my67, no over lapping metal. That's just rust waiting to happen no matter how good of a job you do. Those brakes are sweet!

Looks badass man! I thought I had it good with my mom buying a lot of my parts, but 14'' Baers!! Damn thats hardcore. I love it and am jealous of those brakes. I am building my 68 as my senior project, so I know a little bit about the age thing. Keep up the good work.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Looking good YZF!!! I also especially like the brakes!!!! Yeah it is probably going to suck when your dad gives you that bill. Things add up REALLY fast and then when you stop and take a look at everything you are blown away how much you have spent. Its kind of depressing.
When you start the rear suspension try this. Make a jig to hold the rear end in the right spot, and so you can set the pinion angle (between 2-4degs. You can finalize it after you get the motor and tranny installed). That way as you make your 4 link brackets and install them the rear end won't move. Talk to you later. Josh

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Anybody have any estimate of the fuel mileage of a 383 stroker built to about 600 hp with a powerglide transmission and 3.73 rear end on 22s would do on fuel mileage? I would kinda like an estimate, if I can get close to 12 or above I might fix it up for a daily driver, if not, I might just make it a bit more plain, no stereo, ac, or heater and other things like that.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
383, powerglide, 3:73, none of those work into a fuel mileage equation. I'm going to say in the 2-5 mpg range.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Anyone who puts 383, 600 HP, Powerglide, 3.73's with 22" wheels or any combo of those AND is even thinking about gas mileage, I have some land in Florida to sell you. LOL
My guess is single digits. Lose the powerglide. You want something with and overdrive. With that power, 4L80E would be my choice.

Re: my '68 chevy (no name yet)
Finally got most everything tacked together, now I would just like some approvals of my bracing and all before I start welding everything together. It's supposed to handle high speeds and 600 hp and possible more in the future. The tubing is 1 7/8 diameter and 1/8 wall. What you think?
I will add some more to the front and the center of the frame if possible after I have the engine and transmission in. Last edited by yfz450_0569; 10-22-2008 at 11:05 AM. Reason: fix the pictures |
