Yes you can turn your engine to TDC and cut a new line in the balancer to line up with the new timing pointer. I've done this before, and have also welded up the original mark and ground it smooth. This way there is no confusion when setting the timing. I didn't mention this before since this can be confusing to some people.

We'll after 3 trips to the auto store, a new sets of gaskets, countless hours, and a trip to the emergency room (Never ever spray brake cleaner in a rag held in your hand, if you do you better be wearing goggles), I finally got the new timing cover on. The timing cover oil pan seal would not go on so I had to pull the oil pan to get everything buttoned back up.

Here are a few pictures of my split brake line job using ChiefRocka's example. It's not as nice but should do the job, atleast unitl I put in disc brakes next fall.

I also picked up new headers, starter, spark plugs, water pump, and 1406 carb. I did not realize when I started this that nothing was interchangeable between the I6 and V8, not even the bolts.

I also figured out that everyone on this site, but me, must be rich! This is an expensive hobby!!

Right now, all of my investments are tied up in Blood, Sweat and Bondo but I plan to diversify my portfolio soon and start dabbling in "Rust Futures".

Made some progress this weekend. Motor mounts were a pain in the butt and so was the cross member but with a little help and a big pry bar we got her in. I know the suspension going out to the tires looks like crap but that's project number XXVI! If I make it!

Went to install the drive shaft and found that when switching from a 230 i6 TH350 to a 350 V8 and 700R4 the drive shaft will be approx 1" too long. Took it down and had a 1 1/4 cut out and balanced for $67, seemed reasonable. I also replaced the U joints before putting it back in. The yoke shaft looks long but only 1 1/2" is sticking out with another 2" in the housing.

Out of curiosity, why couldn't you just cut the 1 1/4" off the yoke?

Not sure if it matters to you but I'd run the filter before the pump too.

Most carbed engines have a filter before the pump and another before (sometimes in the inlet) the carb....

I thought the same thing but after poking around in the "Engine & Drivetrain" section of this site I decided I'd better get it cut and balanced.

Think that might be a problem? The glass is prettty thick but I might have to rethink it now, thanks.
