Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

FINALLY! Ok, I got the carb set-up on and running strong! This set-up is definitely what she needed to wake up.....Let me know what you guys think.

The best part is everything was bolt-on so I didn't have to cut or ruin any original equipment!

Nice!!!!!!!!! Now you need a vintage boat to pull with it. Have you put many miles on it yet?

Nope, just about 2 miles for a test run. I am worried about the Sherriff's hassling me for not having a hood on. But it seems that Chief Rocka gets around fine....

She runs so good it tickles me! And those Strombergs sound fantastic when they are both open and screaming!

looks great, too bad you are in kind of a rain belt, running without the hood might not be practical, it looks pretty cool with out it!

Corts,

I sure hope your posting to the 60-66 club site, I think you have the ONLY truck with working Duals. PLEASE let the guys over at 60-66 know what going on with your ride. BTW I'm in the middle of the P/S switchover. it seem to be gong smooth, have you done that yet?

Jake

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

Jake,

Yeah, I have Jolly and the rest know over there. I also e-mailed Jolly directly with a write-up of the whole thing including part numbers. If anyone else would like it, let me know.

I'm not going install power steering. I do know where some brackets are, but it's just not the look I am going for.....

Next is making the headers! Or not. I'm not set on that yet.....Definitely putting on duals soon though. Hopefully before the Billetproof show in June.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

I had a thought for that hood dilema. How about geting another hood or even a 60 61 chevy hood and making a scoop out of the front grills and snorkly area to make it look like a factory type scoop. low profile but sneaky stocky kinda look. could be a ton of work but would rule for sure. Oh yeah and lower the **** out of that thing. Your truck is insane by the way i Love it.

Yeah that is something I had thought about too. Actually, the more I look at the picture without the hood, the more I think I might keep it like that.

Thanks Chief Rocka!!

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

Hey Cort,

You may be able to find one of the Ford scoops up in Alaska. Look around up there, I hear of all kinds of stuff setting around all over the place up there.

I know you probably picked up some bottom end with your setup, but what is the CFM of the Strombergs compared to say a 2 barrel Holley, Autolite or even a Rochester 2bbl. You may have been able to accomplish similar results with a spacer under one of those carbs and kept your hood.

Post up some pics of that Carryall. My buddies Dad had a 63 GMC 4x4 Carryall when I was in college. That thing was cool, his Dad tinkered with it a bit. His had a 2bbl carb as I recall and he had dual exhausts with Corvair Turbo mufflers put on it. It was a *****in truck!

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

I actually just a got a hood today to put on her. I will post pics tomorrow.

I ended up not buying that suburban, the whole frame around the doors and windshield were completely rusted out and I just don't have the means to repair it right now.

As for the 97's, they are 155 CFM each. I went with two carbs mostly because nobody has done this to a big block V-6 and I just wanted something nobody has seen yet to break-up the monotony (probably spelled that wrong) of a world filled with SBC's. No offense to anyone....., almost all of my vehicles have had them and I love them too.

Interestingly, if you use the equation for figuring out how much CFM your engine can handle, which is:

Cubic inch Displacement X Max RPM
---------------------------------------------- = CFM
( 3456 )

For my engine I get 317.7 CFM and the two Stromberg's together equal 310 CFM. That worked out pretty damn good but completely by accident.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

That CFM formula could probably be used at any RPM from about 1000 on up.
Pretty cool, you can calculate the engines CFM needs at max torque and cruise, or at least see what the engine is using.
I forgot what CFM Rochester and Autolite are, but I seem to remember Holley 2bbl's are 390.
I agree with the uniqueness though, very cool and it runs good too.
You plan on building some headers later or just go with some big pipe duals for now?
My son Joe is on terminal leave right now, he is scheduled to get out of the Coast Guard on July 10, 2009...depending on what North Korea does!
He's an MK too was on the Polar Sea, Baranof in the NAG and now doin the 41and 33's out of San Diego.
