Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
I've been wanting to see this done considering how difficult it is to get a reasonably priced 67-72 short-wide. Thanks for the valuable info! Keep up the excellent work.

Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
Got a late start today, but made some progress. I cut 4" holes in the center crossmember for the exhaust pipes. Got everything deburred and ready to weld. I drilled all the holes in the frame in order to secure the trailing arm crossmembers. Now I just need a boat load of 7/16" grade 8 bolts to finish it up. I also managed to get the donor 12 bolt cleaned up and torched off the spring perches and shock mounts.

Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
Well, I got the rear axle all cleaned up and installed. I needed to install ECE's super track bar to see if it was going to work with my 3/4 ton upper frame mounting bracket. Jeff from ECE had told me my 3/4 ton frame bracket may not work with the super track bar. He said some 3/4 tons used a different frame bracket and would have to be reworked in order to mount the bar. Well sure enough, mine was the wrong one. I had to move and modify the frame bracket to get it to work the the ECE track bar. All worked out well though. At this point, the rear end is all set up. Next step is to reinstall the Gear Vendor so I can set the pinion angle and weld the axle perches. I've also marked up the frame for the c-notch.

Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
Before and after shot of the upper track bar mount.
You'll notice I needed to move the bracket towards the rear and away from the frame slightly to work. I then needed to make up for the gap (on the vertical tab) between the frame and bracket, so I welded a piece of 3/8" plate to it and blended it in. All I need to finish it up is some new grade 8 hardware. Pics. |

Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
Got the axle and trailing arms all centered up, set the pinion angle and tack welded the spring perches to the axle. Also managed to get the frame cut for the c-notch. I used 1/4" plate to complete the notch. Should have everything welded up tomorrow.

Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
72Cheyenne454, just read through the thread since I just shortened the frame on my 71 C10 tonight. You do very nice work and I can appreciate having a clean truck to begin with.
A couple questions for you. Are you going to run an aftermarket trans cross member to help with the exhaust routing to the cut outs in the trailing arm cross member? If so buying or making it? Also this is the first time I am doing this and haven't done the box yet. Do the second set of front box mounts line up where they are supposed to for the front rib of the short box? Thanks and once again, great job! Richard

As for my welder, It's a Hobart Handler 180 with .030" wire. It's turned out to be a good "all around" welder, I'm very happy with it. |

As far as the trans crossmember, I'm not sure what will be required at this point. I need to get the cab sat back down on the frame to see how much clearance I have between the crossmember and cab floor. If I need a different crossmember, I'll fab one up before buying one. Not sure I understand your bed question, but I'll give it a shot. When the 12" is removed from the front half of the bed, the front bed mount holes will line up perfectly with the existing second set of frame box mounts. Is this what you were asking? |

Re: 1972 GMC Shorty Conversion
Thanks again for the comments guys... they sure make me feel like I'm doing things the right way.
I mocked up the rear disc brakes today. Needed to get everything installed so I can figure where to mount the flex brake line bracket. Once I get the flex lines mounted, I can run the some hard lines. I think I have the mounting location figured out - see pics. I'll pick up some fuel and brake line tubing and get to work bending up some lines this coming week. Thanks for looking, here's a few pics of the disc brakes and my proposed flex line mount. |
