Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Sorry to hear that...whats in the Castrol stuff? Most of these degreasers all seem to have the same stuff. They smell the same and if you catch some blowback they really choke you up for a minute.

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Part of my issue is I have no access to a preasure washer. But I have worked with Super Clean before with the tools I have, and had decent results. I'm not really looking to get it all spotless clean, just want to get the thick nasty grime off of it so I can get to the bolts to take it all apart. Once it is in pieces I'll use the parts washer and a media blast cabinet to get then all nice.

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
I picked up a refurbished electric powerwasher for 60 bones awhile back. It doesn't have a ton of guts, but works well when combined with some scrubbing and brushes.
I'm always happy when that part is done.

Mr. Clean huh....never thought of that. Like the oven degreaser, or which product do you mean? I'll go digging around town tomorrow for some.

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
So I've got only a few little things to update, but I know how much you guys like pictures and I do have a few. So, time to appease the masses:
first off is the new toy. I've been wanting one for years, and finally decided that I was tired of dropping transmissions on myself and the floor. So here it is: And here we are with a freshly removed Oldsmobile TH350. I think this one is gonna need a rebuild. |

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
And here for a little bit on the trucks themselves. First up is the donor truck, which has been the focus of most of my time. All that is left for me to do is pull the front crossmember and chassis and the reast will be sold or scrapped. The cab is empty, and the drivetrain and exterior sheet metal stripped. The picture I have on my phone is not quite current, but close. The current ones are on the camera which is still at the shop. Here is the picture I've got right after pushing it back out of my shop, It's amazing how light they are at this point.
I did get a little bit of work on the '65. The front end is pretty much stripped down except for the crossmember, which I am hoping to pull this weekend. And for the money shot Ok, not really but it is a big step forward. she is now completely up in the air and no longer a roller. Hopefully this weekend will bring more weight to the parts pile. Thanks for watching. |

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Mr Clean multi-surface stuff. In the plastic bottle. Put it in a spray bottle and spray, let it sit, then power wash it off. It works amazing on motors. And best way is spray it on. Let it sit. Drive the motor, getting it nice and hot and then spra it off. Covering the alt and water sensitive stuff. Plus it makes ur truck lemony fresh. LOL

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Got some more work done today! Unfortunately it has been a cold, rainy, and extremely windy day, but I did not let that stop me from getting my few hours in. I managed to get both the windsheild and rear window out with out incident.
And the biggest news....the crossmember it OUT! It was just too cold and misserable to keep going. God I need a heater in my shop Last edited by fryer1979; 10-24-2010 at 11:24 PM. |

Nice and slow, but thanks man. Our rain just started today so I guess it is time to buy a heater and bunker down for winter time. Still shootin for late spring or early summer for the maiden voyage.

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Here is a few more pictures I came across after getting my digital camera back. The Olds 350 finally on the engine stand:
And here is a few to show just how far I am on the parts truck tear down. I am hoping this weekend to get the doors off, glass out, and cab off. Also, I did post this in the "Shift Knobs" thread, but it is a part for my truck. This was an old Chevy 350 camshaft I pulled from an engine when I was still working as a mechanic. I cut it into two sections like this, then drilled and tapped the holes for the shifter mount. The other piece was drilled to be a vertical mount and was used (stiil is being used) in a radical off road Jeep Wrangler. I drilled mine to work as a T-handle as that is my preferance. It still needs to be cleaned up a bit, painted, polished, then cleared, but you get the idea. |

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Thanks guys. She is coming along a bit slowly for my taste, but it is progress. Looks like this weekend I may get a full day and a half to spend working on it all, so hopefully more progress pics Monday or Tuesday night.
I thought a lot about making one of those used oil heaters we were looking at before out of the old water heater tanks too. I won't be able to cut holes for venting though, so I am just going with one of those Kerosene turbine type heaters. Hopefully have one up and running here in a couple weeks. |

Re: Fryer1979 '66 C-10 Build
Fryer,
One of my best friends in High School (a very long time ago) Had a 67 cutlass that did an 11.16 in the quarted mile running a warmed over Olds 350/TH400/3:90 rear. You said you wanted to "do it right the first time" well let me ask you, how original is a 60-66 with a small block compared to a 65 with a bad a$$ Olds???? Are you saying to do it right is a small block with the typical 700R4 or 4L60/80??? BOOOORING! I think what your doing here is as cool as ice cream guy. My personal taste is Pontiac. A 400 in my 66 GMC work truck and a 474 incher in a 63 suburban.... Rock on with your build, I have it on my favorites! BTW... I had a 74 camaro that I back halfed and raced with a 440 inch pontiac for about 3 years. That was fun and I happen to like those ugly old mid to late 70 camaros too!

As far as "build it once, build it right" goes, I was mostly refering to the general quality of the build. The original intent was to do a ground up nut and bolt type restoration on it. As finances have forced me back to reality, it is a lot more of a "make it a good daily driver, and fix stuff as it breaks" kind of goal. I can't wait to pop the hood of my '65 Chevy at car shows and see the reactions to an Olds engine, I love that kind of stuff. |
