Good to see you got it fixed and back on the track. It could have dropped a valve if you hadn't caught that before you made a pass.

Do you think it was broke before or after the dyno?

Re: "valdez"

does any body have any knowledge on putting vortec heads on these earlier 350's? do they just bolt on with no problems other than putting a new intake on?

Easy swap as long as your cam has .450" or less lift as the top of the valve guide will hit the retainer with any more lift than that. You can have the guides cut down for clearance with more lift or get special retainers with more clearance built in. I ran them on a 79 Z/28 I had and they made great power on the street.

All you really need is the matching intake & bolts to go with them. The Performer RPM vortec intake works well on a street / strip type vehicle.

The Patriot Performance vortec replacement heads are pretty well done and have some great upgrades for not much more money than a set of new heads from Chevy. I'm going with them on my 4x4 project eventually.

Most mild street performance cams are too big for the unmodified valve guides of the stock vortec heads. Chances are you will need to cut down the guides before you can run them.

Make sure that Performer intake you have is a vortec head specific part. No other gen 1 small block intake will fit. Should be part number 2116.

This is the one I ran on my Z/28.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7116/

I wanted this one but didn't have the hood clearance.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7516/

I would look into getting one of the RPM intakes rather than the standard Performer. It will be a restriction to making the most of what you have right now. Plus down the road if you put a larger cam in there it will keep you from really taking advantage of the cam change.

The local supply of them around here has nearly dried up entirely since the cash for clunkers program. Far too many donors were just destroyed for no good reason. Good luck on the hunt for a nice set with the casting numbers you are after.

Re: "valdez"

Your videos bring back memories. My 69 would run 15.260- 15.263 all night long. I remember punching it when I saw the second yellow light. Never red lighted, and never broke out. I quit racing when the fuel altered I was racing ( he left when I was at 2/3 track) was in my lane at the stripe. I was more interested in where he was going to end up, than if I won the race.
