Re: My new project

I kept getting belt squeal no matter what I did. New belts, belt conditioner, adjustments. I didn't want to over-tighten the belts so finally I put a 29-30" belt from my water pump pulley to my alternator. The other belt goes to the power steering, water pump and crankshaft pulley.

Re: My new project

Did that fix your problem? I did the serpentine conversion for the same reason and haven't had a problem since.

Re: My new project

Ya that fixed the problem.

I replaced my perfectly good 600 Edelbrock carb with a Quadrajet to see if I can get better mileage. I have to work out a small idle problem bit it seems to have about the same power. Thanks to Charlie Roupe for the parts. What a great guy!. The Qjet has smaller primaries. I like the simplicity of the Edelbrock, too bad it isn't a spreadbore. I think they're in kahoots with the oil companies. My next vehicle may be S10 4x4.

Re: My new project

OK gas mileage update. We built a low dollar 388 small block with vortec heads and a performer intake with Qjet. 10.3 compression flat tops and a 350/327 cam, ramhorn exhaust. Gas mileage went up about 30-50%. I'm sure the torque and efficiency of the heads made a big difference. Truck weighs about 4200. The reason I say low dollar, we used swap meet heads, ebay intake, speedway parts, $200 long block. Wish I had a 2200 stall and maybe 3.73 gears but pretty happy with it. Thinking about maybe summit headers next summer.
I am now running a 96 chevy starter with 1000 amp Interstate battery and Ford LTD starter relay on the inner fender. Starts on demand now. Dual tanks, (3 port switch) electric pump.
