Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Got engine wire harness off of the truck today and REBUILT! Feels good to make some progress on the truck. Here's some before and after pics I took. Rewired for that big ole HEI now. The pics of the engine bay and on the concrete are before. The after pic you can't tell a lot, but it looks sweet. I'll post more when I get it back on the truck. Want to thank all the cool people on this site, because without it I wouldn'tve even known where to start on this thing. Sorry for the poor quality, took them on my phone.
Also washed, waxed, and buffed my Tundra today. Lookin' sharp! Man it was a lot of work though! Also found out that Tundra's like mine do 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds! Stock! AWESOME! Can't wait to do some mods to it too, exhaust, intake to make it go even faster!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Ansell is the brand. They're a thin black material dipped in a gripper typer gray rubber. They're great for auto work. Not sure where to get them. I bring them home from work (shhhh! don't tell!). They're just my old ones that are worn out, so I bring 'em home for use around the house and truck.

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Well, now I've decided since I have this nice clean new harness, I don't want to put it on a greasy engine. So guess I'm gonna work on scubbin' it down and painting. Also, got some cash to buy my battery! Hopefully won't be long now!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Picked up this today:
It's a side post battery so it'll have a cleaner look. Also got my new cables and some paint to repaint my battery tray. Earlier today I went out and scrubbed my engine down with purple power. Getting it ready to spray bomb it. Then it'll be on to getting it running again. I'll post pics when I get more done!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Thanks man! I'm slappin' the stocker's back on for now, just wanted to clean it up and get it runnin' again! When I get around to rebuild it'll be offy intake, header, eddy 500cfm and bigger cam! And of course some chrome goodies to top it off! It's good to know someone's still keeping up with me!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Yep, I'm checking in
Was just wondering if you were going to paint them too...they make the high heat cast iron paint which would look good against that green

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Unfortunately I can't get the exhaust pipe loose from the header (already broke one stud off). And the intake is actually not too bad, just needs to be cleaned up a lil more. So just gonna put them back on as is. The black does look good in the last pic the fan & pulley is primer, painted them satin black. I'll post pics of it when I get it all put back together. And hopefully running!

Yeah, doing all my work at our duplex right now. Nice neighborhood though, there's a 68 swb a few houses down from me. Haven't got to talk to them yet. Building a house next spring with an attached 3 car garage and detached 3 car garage! I can't wait. At that point it'll be major tear down rebuild from the ground up.

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Crazy about that green! Been thinking about bringing my truck back to stock (6 cylinder) and your engine is hitting the right buttons with me. Excellent choice!
You asked about the rust on the manifolds... that will never really go away without sandblasting and an exorcist, BUT it usually doesn't creep through paint. I have painted manifolds like that and they looked great for a couple years, longer if you hit it first with some metal prep (muriatic acid based product). Doing a build on a tight budget is tough, you need to set priorities and stick with the basics until your budget picture improves. You sound like your on the right track with that - get it running, take care of the small stuff that needs rework before modifying anything. Clean, paint, clean, paint, clean.... You can vastly improve your truck and make it a pleasure to work on by getting everything cleaned and spray bombed. A lot of work but dirt cheap and it pays off big time. You may even find that you like it better as a fresh stocker then something modified. Looks like a great beginning no matter which way you go with it!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
^ Thanks DesertCat! Yeah, I've seen so many of the straight sixes done in the more common chevy orange. Looks good, but when my truck is gonna be a burnt orange/copper color I think it'd clash. The original Alpine Green color really pops under the hood of my truck anyway.
Well, I think I've been talked into spray bombin' the exhaust, but the wife insists on watching our money right now (got a 2 week vacation comin' up!). So might have to wait a bit on that. I'll probably go on and put it back together for now, and after vacation take it back apart and paint it up. I've been working on it today. Put the fan and pulley back on. Really (such a small thing) happy with the fan spacer. Took the old one and cleaned it, hit it with some 1000 grit sandpaper, and buffed it with some Never Dull. It shines like a new penny now! Got my carb/throttle linkage back on the intake, good thing I took pics of that Also painted the Chevrolet script on the valve cover with a paint marker and spray bombed the power steering pump/pulley and altenator fan. Eventually gonna convert to a 1 wire altenator (still running the external regulator) anyone know a good thread for that on the straight sixes? Don't worry pics soon to come!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread
Picked up a chrome oil cap today for it. getting rid of the breather, I think you don't need it if you have a pcv valve. Anyone know?
Also I was wondering if my alpine green is year correct for my truck/engine? Either way I love it and gonna keep it even when I rebuild, but was curious. Thanks in advance!
