Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Jon, I think the its more noticeable on the tach because they didn't add the 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65 font to it.

Does that have metal backing? its original right, so im assuming so. Im curious on how much that whole process cost you if you dont mind

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Just thought you guys would want to see my factory tach:

Found a clean cluster out of a 85 C70. Swapped the pickup speedo in to retain my mileage, and the pickup oil PSI gauge, and lens. It all works the 86 dash connector circuits all matched up too! Best $40 i've spent in awhile.

For those of you who have used the combo tach/fuel gauge, what are you using for a Brake warning lamp?

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

A little off topic but, I thought it is weird that no one ever mentions removing spedo cable from tranfer case or transmission to give more slack when removing guages. Also a quick tip to anyone removing there guages anytime soon, wet sand and buff the clear guage covers. Its a real simple project and so worth it. You can see above insidious 86 has spider webbing on his clear plastic.

Will the Gm sports gauge work with my fuel injected 87? Called to ask but they weren't sure if it would or not.

It will work just fine. I put one in my truck but I used it with my 5.3. The tach comes with a wire harness that you run direct to your hei dist. There is a place on your dist to plug it in. It is a plug and play for you. I love mine. There is a thread on here that has some good info on the gm sport tach.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Cool. They called back and said I would need to run some type of adapter to run it off my coil pack??? I'm thinking I should be good just running it off the distributor right? I am about to swap in a vortec 383 but I am keeping the factory tbi system. Thoughts on this adapter?

I'm located in Huntsville, AL by the way. Small world. Lol

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

No adapter needed. There is a white wire coming off of the coil that is the tach output. Run the tach signal wire from the tach (mine was brown) to that wire. It should accept a regular female spade connector. Done.

Honestly, I sold the truck before it got installed. JKnight has his installed; I think he was pleased with it.

I have one installed and I am very happy with it..The only negative thing I would say is that the orange color is a little off..No big deal to me..Otherwise I am very pleased.

Instead of unscrewing it from but "bullet" in the tranny why not just use the quick release on the back of the speedometer to detach the cable?

That's how I always do it, unless it has cruise. If it has cruise, I will take it loose under the hood.

Im very pleased with it and it lights up the same as a factory tach or fuel gauge.

I would say not a 100% perfect match to an original it does far out weigh any other option for our trucks for the low cost of $195.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

I agree with JKnight. I have said it more than once that I was way better off going with the gm sports fuel/tach guage rather than spending $250.00 with a factory tack and maybe it worked. Not a factory exact match but it looks great.I put mine in a 91 cluster. Had to have a electronic speedo with my 5.3.Mine looks great.

I think there is only one tach. If you have an output for a tach, it should work.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Well, I finally found a tach setup for my truck. Took almost two years from when I started this thread on 6/17/2011 and here it is 4/14/2013. Geesh. Yes I know I put on the white face overlayment but thats the look I was going for. When I get a chance to take some night pictures I will get those up on here as well. The black box up the speedo and tach which is normally used for diesel engines, has a service engine soon side and a blank side. I have never before seen the service engine soon in that box before and I am very curious as to what truck this bezel would have originally been in. I am using the blank side as the brake warning lamp since that area is not being taking up by the fuel gauge. The second pic is to share the original mileage on my truck. All 437,515 miles. The original motor was pulled at 417,000 though it was still running strong it was just a 305 and could not handle what I was planning for the truck but it served the original owner and myself very well. My girlfriend thinks I should make a coffee table out of the original motor. I dont know though.
