Re: Project 67
finally got this thread moved to the build section looking for input from everyone. Suspension should be going back together shortly, next up is pulling the upper and lower control arms off cleaning and painting then to start planning out the air ride set up. Anyone have some input on hardlines for the air ride? We have the cups and upper bag plates for front, 2 compressors, re7 slams for front and re8 slam specialties for the rear. Planning on using 2 tanks and a manifold valve set up.

Re: Project 67
Passenger lower control arm assy is removed. Detailing in process. Ordered 3 Moog joints upper n lower should be delivered Monday. Cheaper ball joints are out there ($19 versus $30) but only wanted to do this once on this truck's suspension. And the original joints have lasted 50 yrs. Rubbers are shot and rotted but joints are actually decent.

Re: Project 67
Done some more POR 15 painting on the upper n lower A arms. Installed the two new upper ball joints. Discovered the condition of the driver's upper ball joint wasn't what is appeared. Hit it once with a hammer and it seperated in the middle. Good thing I had planned to replace it as it was going to fail soon anyway. All the ball joints appear original. Done the grinding on the upper ones to remove the factory rivets. Also test fitted the passenger upper bag plate that fits on the engine cradle cross member using grade 8 hardware. After locating a couple of 3/4 to 1/2 adapters for the 90 degree air fittings is all that is left on the passenger side to reinstall it and 2 1/2 drop spindles. The drivers side lower ball joint is the only hold up on it. Next task to is changing the rear end from 6 lug to five.

Re: Project 67
small update, sammy has finished up the bags on the front after a slight delay with issues with the drop spindles but after new ones delivered it is done. so i visited today to get the old 6 lug rear end out from under the frame, got it removed and holes drilled for the air bags in the frame the only pic i got was of sammy hitting some spots he missed with some por15, hopefully monday i will get over to put in the new rear end, and we will have a rolling 5 lug frame

Re: Project 67
Well sammy had more than the flu he was actually almost septic and finally is feeling better and the heat has subsided some what, today we took almost an 100 mile drive to pick up a craigslist find, a pretty decent drivers bedside, has a little rust but not nearly as bad as the one for the truck. and as luck would have it the seller had a project sitting in his driveway and is a member of the board, i forgot his board name, but it was great chatting with him, hopefully we will get the rear end under the frame tomorrow, just have to tweak one of the mounting holes on the frame for the bags and bolt it all together, maybe have some pics to post on here tomorrow

Re: Project 67
Bags n 5 lug rear with 1" drop block are now installed on the frame. Finally.
When piggy catches up new brake lines front to rear.3/8" Air lines with clamps to the frame. And finish blasting the cab firewall/ under the cab. Made two plates out of a partial cross member for the center bolt as the trailing arm hole is huge compared to the 3/8 16T bolt used for the bag to secure it to the arm. Used 15/64 drill bit for a lil extra wiggle room. Fender washer n a locking washer on the head. For you pic hounds..pics

Re: Project 67
Mostly installed Pwr steering gear box, and have some parts yet to install. Set of brake lines from Inline Tube, 50' 3/8" airline for the bags, some PTC fittings, and SS 3/8" clamps. Need the time to get this nightmare of lines on the frame. A lead on a different engine has been located with some surprise goodies to pickup Monday. Details and additional pics coming after it is safe in the garage. Meantime I have only two teaser pics..Enjoy

Re: Project 67
Well 1 step foward, 2 steps back, went to work on project odd ball yesterday and ran into a few issues. So got the new 3/8" DOT air line wanted to run some temporary lines so it could be air'd up, and the air line was just a little bit too big for the brass PTC swivel fittings. After some head scratching and cussing, we determined the PTC fittings are 5/16" OD! So guess the automotive fastner company we purchased them from gave us the wrong size. The worst part is to remove the fittings both the rear bags will have to be unbolted along with the front bag plates and possibly even the ball joint to put in the new ones. The second issue or question that came up was with the freshly rebuilt 283 we recently acquired. The heads do not have any holes for provisions for accessories and we were planning to use a factory style serpentine setup. So now the choice has to be made on changing the heads to something with acc. holes. Anyone else ever use a vortec head on a 283?

Re: Project 67
I have never used a vortec 350 head on a 283 but the chambers aren't much bigger. The only problem I see is that the chamber is designed for a 4' bore.Although the 283 isn't that much smaller at 3.875.I have used 400 heads on 350's without problems so the bore differance shouldn't matter much.Someone on here should know for sure.

Re: Project 67
Horse traded and had a bench seat recovered for the truck. I think there was 8 springs in the seat totally screwed up. But I had picked the right guy for the job having discussed this prior to the transaction. Actually figured only 4 would require work. So relieved myself of some items I wouldn't use anyway and got this seat done for actually no cost dollar wise to me. Pics to follow.
Now on hand are the correct PTC fitting for the 3/8 airline. So I will tear back in the ball joints to replace those fittings soon. When weather is kind. The cab has received a lot of sanding, primer with very little more left before Epoxy coating. While working on the re-skinned doors I found a major repair needed on the drivers door latch. A fellow board member has decided to offer a patch panel from a scrap door that should work great. I have have a pic of the blowed out holes. Seat is black but looks odd from my phone after downsizing the pic.
