Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

You know what I am starting to like about Summit Racing? If I order your parts early enough in the day, I get the delivery on the next day. Unheard of!!!

Well, here everything is laid out and ready to install.

Double rolling action...

Rumble stick!

This ought to help balance things out a bit...

New Carter pumping the fuel for me...

Send in valve reinforcements!!!

This is what my Summit Bucks paid for. Not sure if I'll use it or not since I took the time to refinish the original. However, Summit gives full refunds on returns, no questions asked!

Time to get dirty, hopefully I will only need one of these things.

Here's the guy guarding the truck when I can't be here working on it.

Spark plugs out so the cylinders can be pressurized.

New springs going in without a problem.

Cam is greasy and finding it's way home...GO TO YOUR HOME!!!

Cam installed. Time to link the top to the bottom! Felpros ready for some work too.

Pushrods and rocker arms ready to rock!

I hate to hide all this new stuff but it has to get covered up at some point...the finish didn't come out too bad for some VHT high heat spray paint and an hour worth of hand buffing...

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

Well, I had some major problems installing the new harmonic balancer. Noob didn't realized that a harmonic balancer installion kit was needed to put this thing on. I didn't bang it on or anything, I knew that could damage the bearings. However, I could swear that the tolerance for the key was off. So I filed it down some. That didn't work either. So I bought a new key and tried to replace it. I couldn't get the old one out and damaged it further. So there I was filing it down again. That's when I realized that an installation kit was needed. Unfortunately, I gouged my nicely restored timing chain cover beyond what I wanted to repair. I guess the free one is going to get used after all. I'm not real sure about this huge Chevy logo, but the black finish will match the new valve covers great. Hopefully the water pump will cover it up!

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

I couldn't get the rocker arm in far enough to allow the fuel pump to mount to the block. So, I turned the motor over a bit to get the push rod to move inside the block further and there it was...flush mounted and ready to pump some octane (complete with stainless hardware)!

Water pump is ready to see some action! Wouldn't be right if I didn't use stainless hardware.

Ok, this thing is really starting to come to life now. I am really liking this black theme. New intake and valve covers...CHECK! Yup, check the hardware.

Time to install the pulleys. VHT spray paint and hella elbow grease making it shine!

Put the Joe Gibbs Degreaser to use and cleaned the front of the block and the accessories. Looking better for sure.

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

Fan restored and installed. Tried to install the new alternator belt, but it is too short. I also see that the alternator pulley is on a different plane from the water pump pulley. Gonna have to shim it before we try to start the motor. Before that can be done, I have to order a longer belt.

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

Thermostat housing and intake manifold fittings installed. Also noticed the fuel pump leaking fuel so I hooked up the old fuel line. This reminded me that I wanted to replace it anyway. So, I ordered a new pre-bent stainless line from LMC.

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

Time to put this four post lift to use and go underneath the truck.

There are several things I wanted to address under here. First of all, I can't begin to count the number of mud hornet nests that were underneath the truck. I scraped all of those things off...outta here!

Next, I saw some leaks in my garage under the transmission. I was hoping to find the source. Since the previous owner said the transmission was recently rebuilt, I suspected the trans coolant lines were the problem. Turns out, it was the speedometer gear housing. I tried to replace the o-ring, but out of an assortment kit, everything was close but not right. I'm not real comfortable with the brake fluid trick so I'll need to look for a replacement.

I really wanted to give a good cleaning while under here. I never imagined the amount of grease and grime that I encountered, especially on the cross member. I spent an entire night just tidying up. I really cleaned up the sides and back of the engine block where the valve covers had been leaking. I also removed the flywheel cover and took it to work. The parts washer should clean it up real nice!

Last, it was time to drain the transmission fluid and engine oil. This is what things looked like before I got started...

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

Ok, so that oil pan looks questionable but that transmission pan is just unacceptable. From the looks of it, the starter could be original too, yuck! Time for a parts order.

On the way...

1- TCI speedometer housing
1- transmission pan
1- starter

Re: Omodified's 1970 SWB Custom/10

Starting to SCARE me!!!!!

So I had a real scare today! I went to O'Reilly for a replacement starter. I asked for a starter for a 1973 C10 with a 350 since that is what I have referenced all the engine parts for to date. From what I read, these crate engines cover from like 73-80 something but not 1970. Anyways, the starter he showed me had a different bolt pattern from mine. So, he looked up one for a 1977, 1983, 1987, all with 350. None of those matched mine. He finally brought one that matched and he said you have a 305! What????? I took it with me and went straight home to do some research. I cross referenced the starter he gave me and it did come back to a 305, and a 296 and a 327 and some 6 cylinders but I didn't see any 350's. Oh wait, theres one, a 1977 Corvette, only year. Hmmm, the only way I am gonna figure this out is to find the code on the engine block. So, I drove over to my friend's house and lowered the truck. There is no easier way than climbing inside the enging bay, laying across the engine, and looking behind the drivers side head. The code reads...10067353. So, this post confirms what I have... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...40&postcount=4

Ok so this answers my previous question...250HP!!!!

Then I go to install the starter, and quickly realize that the block would have accepted any of the bolt patterns that O'Reilly's had in stock. LOL. Well, everything happens for a reason!
