This brings up an interesting thought about Suburbans. With Chevys, the highest trim level was Custom (67-70) and Custom Deluxe (71-72)...both the mid-level trim. Did GMCs follow this? I know in '72 Chevy and GMC were on the same page, but I believe GMC Suburbans were available as Super Customs prior to '72,yet they would have the mid-level (Custom) trim, right? Am I wrong? Were all top-of-the-line GMC Suburbans Customs?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
I know mine isn't all that well optioned, no ac or tilt, has the black trim band, 350/hydro-matic from the factory (now has a 327) no 3rd seat... so I'm thinking that mine is a lower grade trimpack.
here's the SPID

I don't know why I never did it before. The thought would pass through my mind when I wasn't around the computer(you know I think about trucks even while in front of a judge),but never thought about it while at the computer. Every little bit anyone has to offer is helping this facts gathering process. That's the power in numbers at work that we have here. It's not all in books,it's in your driveway a lot of the time. I was thinking the same thing with having this thread stowed into the FAQ area as a helpful reference.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
I just brought a 1972 example home. It supports much of what we have established but does raise more questions.
Trim Level: It is fairly consistent with what Factory Stock said about 72 sierra grande being a trim level. I say that because it doesn't have power brakes and there are pretty basic options on the SPID, including belt moulding, which in previous years was part of the option package (not trim level). Now I am a little confused why that would be listed with the 2 tone deluxe paint, thought that would automatically include it. Badging: This truck is also real consistent with the example Dantip has above with exception of my rear side badges saying "Sierra" on one side and "Sierra Grande" on the other. Both his and mine have the same z84 code on spid. Speaking of that, why weren't they YE5's given these are 72's? My glovebox door is woodgrain and with Sierra Grande emblem so it should be the top trim level this truck has. My intrument panel is not woodgrain but Vin on spid matches cab vin. As for front fender badges, both his and mine say "Sierra" but they made these badges that say "Sierra Grande" see pic below courtesy of Sharpie. So not everything adds up with the 72 badging in my case. Does Dantips truck have woodgrain and Sierra grande emblem on the glovebox? If not, then his could be a "Sierra" and then at least his badging would make sense. I also wonder why mine has the plain side marker lights, i suppose they could be replacements. Truck does appear to have had some paint work at one point.

Here is the Grande fender emblem courtesy of Sharpie posting in another thread. Now, what we don't know is what year truck this was on.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
I don't think my glovebox was changed since the SPID vin matches truck cab vin. That means someone would have had to add the bright trim ring, wood applique, sierra grande emblem assuming you can't peel and reapply a SPID (don't know never tried). If the Spid can't be transferred, changing all that seems very challenging for a typical owner.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
I agree with Dan. It's not hard to remove and change those parts. SPIDs? No. That Sierra Grande fender emblem is '72 because it became a trim level.
What are the option #s for all the trim levels 67 through 72?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
So in 72, it must go like this:
no option- Custom (nothing on SPID) Z62- Custom Deluxe (says Custom Deluxe on SPID) Z84- Sierra (says Sierra or Cheyenne on SPID) YE5- Sierra Grande (Sierra Grande or Cheyenne Super on SPID)

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
I have had the same question about trim levels/features of the 1967 GMC super custom. Below are some photos of my truck - a '67 3/4 ton super custom. I purchased it from my grandfather who had bought it new - so everything except wheels, radio, and door speakers are stock. My understanding is the fender badge, large rear window, side trim, inner door liners, and (perhaps) seat was unique to the super custom. Is this correct?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
We concluded its most likely a sierra with modifications (per Tim and Dan and I think I agree too) so that's consistent with z84 being on the SPID.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?
This is an interesting thread and has caused me to dig deeper into what what the previous owners have added to my Super Custom.
This document may be of some help as it also relates to other posts in this discussion. It is from GM Canada's Vintage Vehicle Services and it shows a matrix of the various option availability for 1972 GMC pickups across the trim levels Z62, Z84 and YE9. I have determined that according to this document the chrome side marker light trim and the bright foot pedal trim did not come from the factory. So a PO must have installed it right? My other question in an earlier post was the GMC tailgate band described as "tailgate lower trim with wood grain insert and bright lettering". I discovered elsewhere in this document that with the BX2 Option which described as "Bright metal lower molding Black painted insert. Includes Bright upper and lower mouldings on tailgate. Bright tail and backup lamp bezels and Bright fuel tank cap..." My Truck as BX2 listed on the SPID as well B85 (upper moldings). So a PO must have just added the wood grain inserts although this really looks original to the truck as it has aged and needs replacing. Thanks and let's keep this thread alive.

They make it confusing in that data by referring to the tailgate band as "lower" moulding. The band only came with woodgrain side mouldings which was only the Sierras and Sierra Grandes in '72. Super Customs got the lower mouding that goes across the bottom of the tailgate.
