Re: Camshafts..
Call Howards Cams... Supposedly, the ramps on their cams are far more forgiving (i.e. lazier). Tell them what your looking for, they'll hook you up! I've been contemplating going with one of their cams over the comp XE line.

That thing is that it just sucks for any kind of camshaft now a day's to besically cross you fingers and hope you got it right with additives, to bad they did this to us, good old regulations with lead and zinc removed. But the good news is we still have our cool hobby so far, lovin to have a cool truck with lots of horse power even just to go to Canadian tire and back.

Re: Camshafts..
I've had an XE256 in a 327 in my '66 Caprice for 9 yrs so far. I've got about 15,000 miles on it so far and no problems. Here is the link to the additive that I run that, I talked about yesterday. http://www.cam-shield.com/index.html You will be fine with the oils that you picked for break in and running after the break in. Comp recommened to me when I swapped cams the other year in my step side to run the VR1 after the break in. I also used the Lucas stuff to break it in before I knew about Cam Shield. I've seen alot of people talk s%$# on the Thumprs on here. The truth is, mine ran faster with one. Anyway, pick your cam and have fun with your truck.

Re: Camshafts..
The only thing I would do different, is break in with a single weight oil... like straight 30wt.

Those are just fine... they aren't "small". But they're not "huge" either. Clear as mud?
Flip a coin and order one already... Gary

Re: Camshafts..
Here's some info for you:
The Xtreme Energy and Voodoo cam lines were designed by the same guy, Harold Brookshire. Harold is a legend in the cam business, and has been used as a "hired gun" by many cam companies to design new cam profiles. He is probably one of the sharpest minds ever when it comes to camshafts. He designed the Xtreme Energy line first, then moved over to Lunati and designed the Voodoo line. In a nutshell, the Voodoo line is essentially a much improved Xtreme cam. Yes, the Xtreme grinds have a tendency to be a little noisy due to the faster ramps and the fact that it hangs the exhaust valve open a little longer than normal. The Voodoo cams I have come in contact with are quieter than the Xtreme cams. Both Xtreme and Voodoo cams are excellent products, and you wouldn't go wrong by picking either one. My nod is to the Voodoo because it is a design based on information learned from the Xtreme series. If I had to pick a specific cam for you, I would choose the 60102. My buddy has the 60103 is his 350, and it's definitely a little rowdy cam that likes to come on at about 3000 rpm. With the 60102, you'll have the best of both worlds. It'll work with a stock converter, pull nicely from idle to 5800, it'll have a nice little lope, and should return decent mileage if you're not romping on it all the time. I used to call Harold on occasion and pick his brain about cams. It was like going to cam class. That guy is the Einstein of cams, and he has literally tested every type, style, and fad of cams out there. His health has been declining the last few years, but I always enjoyed talking to him. The guys on this thread nailed the cam choices. Bigger is not always better, and there's some smart guys on here who haven't fallen for that BS. Another thing........Don't turn your idle way down just to get the "sound". Low idle speed is a sure way to kill a flat tappet hydraulic cam. Plus, it makes the engine sound lazy, in my opinion.

Re: Camshafts..
This is the one I bought for mine it is pretty close to the 350hp 327 that was in the 66 - 67 Nova's has a nice lumpy sound and won't kill your vacuum. it is only $86 + the price of he lifters

Re: Camshafts..
Good info chevyrestguy, thanks for the school on cams, real interesting to learn more in the cam world, may try a voodoo out next time if I can find a supplier up here in The great white North, the comps are defititly a bit noisy on the ramp up, even though you get uesd to it, why have too.

Because for about 3/4s of this thread I had you mistaken for another member on here. It was when you said you were going to have your dad pay for something because you didn't have a CC or paypal.....it made me go "now wait a minute". That's when I put it all together and realized you were a different member! lol
Very cool to be doing this at 19 young man. Also, thanks for having the balls to serve your country!!! Keep your spirits high and your head low.... ![]() |
