Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Thanks!
I read quite a bit over there about the compressor a guy had one that was a horizontal version of what I got and the saylor beall company is still in business so I was able to get a lot of info there. Had to get rid of the factory check valve/manifold and replace it with a screw on check valve and recreate the manifold for the pressure switch/pop off valve and pressure gauge out of black pipe to get some leaks squared away but it's working like a champ now. I got started reading your S-box build. Looks like some complicated rust repair. |

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
As I inch closer to getting the cab painted, I've recruited some help from my brother on the doors. One of the patch panels didn't quite have the curve of the original so he's working some magic on it when he has time.
Shot a little rust converter on them once I got done, phone was dead so no pictures... Been pondering the door check issue these doors have, the doors on the truck had where the hinge mounts metal ripping out and it's very common, so looking at newer trucks I noticed door checks are separate mechanisms. They look pretty simple and like it should be pretty easy to fabricate on to our trucks so I spent 60 bucks on a couple of these from rock auto. This one is for a 2000 Chevy Silverado, and I'm sure those doors are about as heavy as the ones for our trucks so I'm hoping for the best. Once I get them, I'll share my findings on getting them in. I hadn't seen any info about people doing it yet, so I'm hoping it works. Hoping there is enough room to mount it on the pillar, I'll know soon enough. |

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Hard to believe it's been over month since I put a post up. Too damn busy and the camera on my phone stopped working. To follow up on the last post, where I was going to try and use newer model door catches. Didn't turn out to be as easy as I have originally thought, so before drilling holes I opt'd not to use them and rebuilt my factory door catch's in the hinges, luckily I was able to locate some replacement friction pads.
Spent last weekend sand blasting bedsides and other stuff. I thought the bed sides were good, just to find out the one I really needed is full of bondo. THe blaster reveals all. I got side tracked on the bed because I was going to see if i could have the guy who did my cab work over the bedsides. After a day and some cash wasted at the blaster I'm about to look at just getting new bedsides when I'm ready to get the bed put together which will probably be closer to the end of the year. So with that distraction out of the way I decided to get back to the cab and additionally I picked up some 6 lug rally's last month because I want to put 15"s back on it. So had those blasted and finally I was able to spray some paint!!! This medium olive poly looks really friggin' good. So it's time for some pictures. Inside is painted and done, and so are the wheels so now I can get tires mounted up. Just a little more work on the doors then I'll be ready to spray the outside, hopefully in the next few weeks. Feel like I'm a lot closer to somewhere with some color on the cab. |

Looking at the paint in a can is nothing compared to seeing it on the truck. And not bad at all for being sprayed in garage not a paint booth. |

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Sanding all week, final wet sand tonight on the doors and cab and tomorrow cleaning and getting the garage organized before doing the deed, and a make shift plastic drop cloth paint booth and Sunday paint on the outside of the cab and the doors. White top medium olive poly everything else. It's my birthday and I couldn't ask for anything better than to get this cab in color on Sunday. Thankfully my brother has bodywork skills, because when he got involved he can see things that to me are completely invisible, and he has what seems like unlimited patience. I know without his help, I wouldn't have been pleased with where I was headed on my own. Pictures and paint at the end of the weekend here's hoping for no bugs.

Thanks! Weather looks like it's going to cooperate, 81 degrees for the high and maybe a little rain. Should be ideal conditions. So ready to have this step complete.

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Long weekend lots of cleaning, 12 hours cleaning and organizing the garage and getting the cab cleaned up on Saturday and final prep and painting on Sunday 12 hours more. The Cab is now in color though and it's totally worth it, it was chilly enough here yesterday that we had to kick the heater on for part of it to get the green base coat to dry, so we could get the top painted white. (very bizarre for the end of July) as cool as it was everything was drying slow and I didn't have reducer for colder weather. Glad I talked myself back into the white on top. Had a few runs in the clear on the doors but a little wet sand and buff will take care of that. had a few bugs get into it also, There was a moth that flew into the clear and flopped, made a mess, My brother got it all out with a razor blade. I wasn't sure how that was going to end up. it was right in the middle of the white on top, the bugs liked the shiny white I guess. Over all, pretty clean results for a garage spray. Took a lot longer than I planned though and didn't wrap it up until around 10:30 PM last night.
Lots of pics to share. Big thanks to my brother for the help with Body work on the doors and handling the crucial parts of the paint. Got to a point time wise where I knew he could paint it faster and I didn't want to keep him there all night while I was learning. Exhausted today but this step is now done and it sets me up to be able to get a lot of work done, engine, interior, electrical, fuel systems, and exhaust before I have to put together and paint the front clip and bed and finish the project. Thanks to my wife also for being understanding. This stuff takes a lot of time, and it's stuff once you start you have to finish. Willie Dog checking things out before painting began, no paint masks for dogs so he had to clear out. A lot of pictures as I said. Great way to spend a birthday weekend. |

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Thanks! Was a busy weekend with not much time to sit back and enjoy the moment. I'll probably just get home tonight and sit a chair out there next to it with a six pack, and stare at it and day dream about the next steps. Or plan B take the Mrs. out for a nice dinner for putting up with my hobby/obsession. Plan B, will be what happens by the way.

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
A little progress, down to just a few things left to strip off the old cab before I can pull it off the frame, and finish prepping the frame to get some paint on it, and then the new cab goes on and I'll and keep the train rolling.
Did the back glass the other night and was able to get the windshield in last night with the help of my brother and a buddy that stopped by. The wife helped me get the back glass in and I can only say that electrical wire pull lube is the only way to go very good stuff. Worked like a charm. More to come in the next week or so. My stupid phone camera is not working right, it's such a pain... |

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
A little something done on the truck over the weekend. Cab set back on the frame still not bolted down but it's in the right place and no scratched, pulled muscles or smashed fingers. Getting a new phone this week should actually be able to get back to taking more pictures. In the middle of getting the motor ready to pull from the donor truck. Should have it out this weekend and then hopefully this project will get on the fast track. We have a baby coming in January so my deadline is approaching quickly. |
