Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

Ordered a 15 gallon Jeep Wrangler gas tank and the Wrangler F.I. in-tank sending unit assembly, minus the fuel pump, for the 5.3L swap. I'll put the appropriate Walbro 255 pump in this setup and hopefully I'll be cookin' with gas...pardon the pun

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

I scored some more pieces for this build. 1968 GMC hood, grille & tailgate. They need some lovin', but I really like the angle of the front of the hood of the earlier hood. (& my hood and grille are in horrible shape ).

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

I think you'll need the 67-68 upper bar to run the hood.. (?) Something like that. I know they're different post 69 but you can change that bar and run the 67-68 hood.

I agree, I like that hood much better too.

Here are a few shots... I know the 5.3 looks rough, but I heard it run and go through the gears without issue. It has 83k miles on it and was in my buddies dad's personal truck that got hit/totalled in a parking deck.

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

Started stripping the extra SWB frame of some of the parts that will be replaced. Took out the k-member (I will reuse it, but not until after the sandblasting and paint step0, worked on the trailing arm crossmember, and a few other pieces/parts.

Oh, and a pic of my only helper when the weather is bad...

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

It doesn't look like much, but it has been a LOT of work. I cut every body rivet that was holding any bracket, mount, or bracing out of my "extra" SWB frame so I when I'm done with the trial install of all my suspension, brake and fuel lines, and the gas tank, I'll be able to take it completely apart and sandblast everything, primer and paint ALL surfaces of the frame and such, then reassemble. I cut a crossmember out, and then bolted it back in so the frame would remain square. I am using all Grade 8 hardware in place of the rivets. I am going to build custom crossmembers in place of the core support, shock, and the other two flimsy rear stock crossmembers, but this way I can take one out at a time and fab each depending on needs (like the two rear ones will also be the supports for the Jeep Wrangler gas tank).

I have to go buy more 3/8" bolts, washers & nuts today. I cut like 140 rivets out. It's a process

Oh, and I built my own hidden hitch out of a hitch from a 2008 Dodge Ram that I found at the scrap yard...$5, what a bargain!

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

Awesome that's a great idea to have everything blasted individually so that there's no secret rust to destroy your ride later in its life. Great work as well in the hidden hitch

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

I am going to work on getting the frame mocked up and get the 5.3/4L60e in this weekend. I also ordered my C-notchs, front & rear tubular crossmembers, and per Chad (69CCRat) I ordered the upper & lower shock mounts from Porterbuilt yesterday. Whoop Whoop!!!

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

And I'm still waiting (relatively patiently) on my PB pieces, but I did go ahead and order the Cadillac CTS-V oil pan, pick-up and dip stick today. The truck pan hangs down WAY to low for my taste...like 2" below the crossmember. The CPP tubular mounts have the motor to far forward, but I think I have that all figured out, but I need the pan to make sure.

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

Got a wild hair and went ahead and modified the stock K-member and moved the motor back 2 5/8" using the CPP tubular stands, 3" FORWARD adapters, and poly motor mounts. I used the 3" forward adapters so I can still use the stock style A/C compressor in the O.E. LSX location, but moved the stands back to the rear 6 cyl frame holes. I had to make/modify the K-member so that the lower CPP stand would sit flat...nothing a little cutting, welding, grinding and drilling couldn't remedy

Here are a couple of shots as it sits right now. Sure wish my PB stuff would show up today

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

Ugh!!! Heard back from Porterbuilt...still several more weeks until finished. I was told 3 weeks and its already been 3 1/2. I know the quality is top notch and so is the $$$, but the follow through seems lacking...

Even though Porterbuilt has added personnel to help with production,... it seems demand is even greater than ever.
I ordered some front shock mounts last week and was told 4-6 weeks!
But that is fine by me.

You are adding alot of resale value to your truck using Porterbuilt parts.

I think it might need the full drop member and forward arms, etc.

Lol... No way!!! I've done all this with the intent of building a driver! You made me buy the PB pieces...damn it!

I also ended up buying the TBSS Pacesetter headers today too.

I'm really hoping I'm not worrying about resale... I just wanted the quality. I do know his stuff is the best. I'm just like an impatient kid...I want my new toys.

Re: '70 GMC SWB Money Hole

I've got to come up with the fuel line stuff, buy new S/S brake hard lines and then figure out the next batch of issues. I'm getting close to needing to tear down the current truck to start fitting the body.
