Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Yea I was thinking of doing some trading on a 292 but The gentlemen thinks one of the cam lobes is wore. But then I'd have to change out front cross member then try to find power steering brackets and mo money, I'm on a tight budget, so I think I'll just stick with what I got.... I'm going to my brothers tomorrow after church and pick up an engine crane(hoist), pull the engine paint it up real nice and hopefully work on the firewall and maybe paint it before I put the engine back in and that part will be done....

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
The 292's came stock as a forest green color..and if done right look really good. I personally am not a fan of green and am going illegal colors with my 292.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
well my engine's were delivered this evening, The clean one I heard run it has a cam lobe wore in the back, and the other one was a freebie and it's not stuck so it may run I have to get me a starter and gonna try and fire it up....
I'll prolly put a new cam and lifters in the clean one it came out of a 65 3/4 ton with 50,000 miles, you would think that the cam wouldn't be wore... anywho I have something else to play with He,He,He.....

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
I always wanted a 292. Those seem like cool old motors. Sometimes you have to wonder about that mileage since the odometer only had 5 digits...could be 50k, 150k, 25th or more!
It is just my unsolicited advice but I would do a quick leak down test or compression test on both motors to see which long block is the tightest. Then you can swap in new cams and oil pumps and other "wear parts" so that you'll have a solid motor that you know will last you a while. You can get a basic cheap leak down test kit from harbor freight and then just need a compressor.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Yea Jason I hear ya, I'm wondering though why it would have a heavy duty double pulley setup, Makes me wonder if it came out of a c-50, I've seem them with that same setup... I'll have to do a compression check on them and see..... You know a lot of people usually when they get an old truck they just swap em out for a V-8 even though the 6 is a good engine, some people like them and some don't, I for some reason like them...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
The reason for running a dual belt pulley setup would be due to high output accessories. Say a high amp alternator for instance. It takes more torque to turn these and a single v belt has a limited amount of friction with which to turn that pully. So for ambulances or tow trucks with these big alternators you'd need to run dual belts otherwise you get lots of belt slipping and squealing.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
I'd run the dual belts and then you've got a backup if one should break!

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Nice score on the motors !!
I would be tempted to just get a couple rebuild kits, a new cam, and rebuild them both !! Not like these are getting easier to find... We watched a rebuilt Pontiac IL OHC6 203 sit at $400 on Ebay for 2 weeks, then in the last 5 minutes of the auction it shot up to $1200 before the bidding closed !! You know, just food for thought.... LoL

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Well I attempted to start the ole dirty engine, First I pulled a side cover to inspect and also the valve cover and it was actually very clean inside not dirty or gummed up. I put a starter on it and put the carb from the good engine and fuel pump and wires and cap. she was cranking slow I guess I would too if I hadn't been ran since who knows when...Gonna try it tomorrow with a good hot battery, gotta make sure I'm getting fire to...
Oh BTW I know no one ask but I paid $200.00 for both engines I think that was a good deal... I have to check and see where the best place to buy cam and lifters...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Well I have some good news I got that ole dirty engine fired up finally, she actually ran pretty smooth, I wanna hook it up to a radiator and run it some more with water and oil pressure gauge and see how it does, she got pretty warm this evening.....before I clean it...McMurphy I'll definitely check them out been a while since I visited...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
I am almost envious!!
Looks like you may have really scored with those engines I bet you are going to have some real fun getting them detailed out !! Not sure if you ever saw DLOE's build, but here is a link to it. Definately one of my fave IL6 builds: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=457465
