Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Started to slightly rotate the distributor when trying to start and found a spot where it sounds like its really wanting to turn over but it just wouldn't catch. You can hear the engine trying to crank but it just won't make it the last bit to kick it over. Battery now down to 43 percent. Gotta charge it up for a little bit.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Could the battery being that low be my culprit?

If you didn't allow for advance then rotate dist CCW about 2 to 5 degrees (a little bit) and try again.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Battery has been charging for around 45 minutes and it's only reading 58%. I am thinking the battery wasn't getting sufficient voltage to the starter to give it the power it needed to fire the engine over.

I think you still have starter gear issue.
Maybe still binding.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I think so too. I did watch the flex plate. It's turning freely but maybe the starter is still binding not allowing the Flexplate to turn as fast as it should be.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I'd count starter teeth and see if tooth count correct for your application.

The starter has nine teeth. How do I verify that's right for my application?

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Is it possible that I might need a higher torque starter for the 383?

I'd do some googling.

Starter gear should not be under flywheel while running or off like in your first picture, you need new starter.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

The starter is brand new but I agree. It's not right. I think it is still too close to the Flexplate causing the gear to fit too tight. Should I go back to the part store and try a different band starter?

The starter gear should be 100% away from flex unless key is in start position, that's how it works

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I have an 1/8" of shims in place now. I think i need to add to that a little more to gt it spaced off some more

An 1/8" of shims is crazy, that's not normal

Starting gear is not sticking now slides in then slides out. Pulled the number one cylinder spark plug and the number 2. Definitely not good.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Here's a question. The truck has a remote start system wired in. Would that interfere with it turning over? I know it winces rpm and then stops the starter but thought that was only when activating the remote start. Thought regular cranking remains unchanged.

Also installed a tach/fuel gauge combo. Could the tach connection into the ignition coil be my problem?

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Hell yeah boys!!!!! She fired up!!!! Man it sounded beautiful to hear that thing fire off! Not out of the woods tho. I think i may have found the problem.

I got in and tried to crank and gave it a little pedal and it fired off and started up. Gave it a little pedal to keep the rpms at 1500-2000 to get it up to temp and let it idle down. Idled perfect at 1000 rpms. Cut her off and let it cool down. Tried to fire it up again and i had to give it some pedal to get it to fire off and had to keep giving it pedal to keep it running. It wouldnt idle this time. If i let off the gas pedal it would slowly drop rpms down to 500 and then choke out and cut off. I looked at the throttle body and i am getting great flow from the passenger side injector and little to no gas from the drivers side! I think it is basically starving itself of fuel.

One thing i should mention. I am running it right now with open headers and no O2 sensor hooked up. I am sure that will effect it a little.

So, looks like i still have some work ahead of me but i will be honest. I will take the small victory knowing that it fires up and runs!

It is indeed. Using a modified throttle body and cop car injectors. fuel pressure regulated to 18 psi. also using a modified computer prom from harris performance.

Nice, are you going to have to run 91 octane?

Also with the TBI, once you set the timing you will have to unplug a wire and set at 0.
