Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

Wow, lots of rust-kinda what I figured-I've bought many with much, much, less rust. I bought one '64 with 78K, it had no bed wood either-no trace, not even a splinter.
It just rots away.

Thanks for the pics, Jon. Very interesting to see the details... and you have the eye for them.

Well, this was the worst example. There were what I would call some rust free bodies there but some were rusted in areas that normal trucks never get, Most had front hood lip rust and then no rust anywhere else. Just about all had scale on the lower control arms from sitting in the mud but that's an easy fix.

I have a bunch of more pictures. Think I took 300 pictures but some are of the Impalas that I was interested in.

Here are a few areas of detail I captured too. I am still in awe seeing untouched original trucks for the originality details if anything else. The old girls just have aged like the rest of us for 50 years.

Yeah, the green fender top was on the truck WITH bedwood yet. I thought it would have been one of the better trucks but everything under the hood was scale

It's too bad they had to sit outside all those years.... Of course now that they have flooded the market so to say. I see current value of these trucks dropping in the very near future. Good and bad I suppose.

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

I was told from one of the local old timers that the green truck with the intact bed floor had been backed into a open shed and the front end was partialy out, but the mice or coons lived under the hood and pretty much rusted away the edges from their messes. Somewhere I have the shot of the inside above the visor on the red/white 65 292 truck. Looking back at some of the pictures taken Friday morning and then Saturday I can already see items that were stolen off the trucks. Had a great close up picture of the maroon 283 with about the only radiator left in place and the AC 13# radiator cap was in place but auction day it must have rusted off or blew away in the storm the night before! Likewise the manual packet and the only dash lighter in the black 66 was gone with the wind by auction time. I guess thats what the auction company meant by your buying it "as is" and it yours on the drop of the sold gavel. All the missing items and added rust and corrosion still never seemed to hurt prices one bit.

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

Did you notice the two packets with the license plate bolts ? Saw two or three of them in these trucks also . One of the trucks lost its owners manuals and papers out of the glove box, only to be found later under the seat. Here's the maroon truck on Friday.

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

That's the radiator cap that went missing on Saturday afternoon from the maroon 65. Yeah I looked at one truck with the license plate hardware and that had a license size screw and a pal nut like for an emblem stud. It was cool and it has a package labeled front and rear pkg on the same sleeve. I see you were shooting the same things I was hose clamp positioning and detail items. Did you notice the two 283 heater hose clamps? The 3/4 water pump outlet used a tower clamp and the other end and the 5/8 hose used the wire clamp style. Also noted these 65 283's only used one alternator upper adjusting bracket and some I've seen in the past used 2 brackets together?

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

I'm still 100% dumbfounded how Mr Lambrecht would let new vehicles just waste away. I've read he sold LOTS of cars, but one vehicle left unsold and put out to rot would eat the profit from probably ten (or more) cars sold. Just count the number of unsold cars and trucks he had, plus trade-ins, and it's hard to see how this dude made it work. Makes absolutely no sense.
I think this stranger than fiction scenario must have lent some kind of odd energy into the immediate atmosphere. I've now seen more than one show where visiting car guys actually got emotional while walking the rows before the auction.
I'm kicking myself lately for not going. I don't think I'd have bought anything, but at least I could have scratched my curiosity itch, so to speak.

Love this attention to details. I bet you guys took it ALL in. Seriously a once in a lifetime chance to compare and take notes on this stuff.
Did you notice (of course you did) the different OEM gas caps? Apparently the guy putting gas caps on when the red-orange truck went down the line was unaware he was installing incorrect caps. LOL.

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

Not exactly, another member once said the maroon cap was a 1966. The maroon truck here was a 1965. Both 65s and the 66 shared the same cap in these trucks. The orange cap was on a 64. All my 66s have the same caps as these 65 66s. My 65s have the 64 style so it must be a transition thing.

This man had plenty of money , many said because he never spent it. It was said by MANY locals he didn't have drywall on the inside of his house till 10 years ago. He owned 3 or more large acre farms and had stock in GM and Texas Instruments from the early years on. Another myth is that these NEW vehicles sat outside the whole time. It wasn't till the other building across the street, where the Bank now stands, collapsed that they were moved out to the farm and that was 15 years ago. Still I share your disbelief on on all the whys but it was very interesting talking to his neighbors and locals who in that small town knew him well. Many of them from different areas of town said the exact same thing. He would NOT sell you a used car, they just drove them to the farm and parked them. He was such a large turn over dealer that Chevrolet would sell him their left over stock to sell. Some so late I expect that the new models were already out. These became to old and were put away. There was a motorcycle dealer like that here in town, he had several new left overs back in the 70s, brand new bikes.

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

At this point, I almost given up figuring out why they were never sold, every other dealer in the country, new or used, would have no problem selling them with the way they were equipped, which was very typical set ups in the 60's. The most important thing from this time capsule auction is learn as much as possible the way they were made at the factory. GM rarely offered close up real color photos of under the hood, engine or the interior. From the newer photos, it appears there was at least one 292. Did anyone get a good shot of the green color? From one of the photos of this engine where the paint was still solid, it looks darker than Detroit Diesel green, aka Alpine green.

Yup. Details rarely or never seen may be present. There is sticker placement, inspection marks or tags, somebody already mentioned clamps and their original positioning. I was hoping to see part number tags on wire looms, as this is something that WAS clear and legible on my survivors, until like a fool, I cleaned the engine compartment without wrapping the paper tags with clear tape. The tags are still there, but I can't quite read the numbers. Idiot!.

Re: LIVE bidding from Lambrecht auction on now

Here are the stories on how he ended up with all these trucks .. Basicly he was a pack rat and did store them very well in the beginning , but after he lost storage on buildings etc he put them out to pasture...

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/15/au...anted=all&_r=0

http://www.omaha.com/article/20130928/NEWS/130928682

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2...p-for-auction/

But this sums it up best ..

Ray Lambrecht liked to sell only the newest cars. If he still had new Chevys in stock when he received the next year’s models, he’d park them in his nearby warehouse. If he saw promise in a certain model -- like a Cameo pickup or the ’78 Corvette -- he’d buy those for his collection.

And when customers traded in for new, he’d store most of the used cars on several lots he owned in town and, later, beneath the trees at the edge of his 80 acres outside of Pierce.

He saw the collection's long-term potential, his daughter said. It was their retirement fund.

“Ray was kind of an unusual businessman. He knew someday there was going to be some value there,” VanDerBrink said. “They’d drive them out to the farm and park them. That’s where they sat for years.”

Was the engine stuck a bit? We tried to turn several but most were stuck. I was not sure if a bit of lube and a gentle nudge would get them going. Glad to see it running so well.
