4bt cummins swap

Alternatives to a 4bt, here are a few:

Availability
Price is reasonable
Decent power for reletively cheap and good mileage
All the 6bt dodge pieces will bolt on to aid in swaps etc

Cons

A little loud and shaky for most people. Balance the crank and rods and add a fluidampr or ATI and they get a lot better.

so far i got 4-53 Detroit

im sure a lsx or newer diesel can provide higher power and torque. but im looking for a dependable, fully mechanical and realtivly decent mileage diesel.

Isuzu 4BDT1 or 2, Mercedes OM-617 ( 300TD ) are a couple. Both have relatively easy swap potential. Some are working with the smaller Kubotas, but they really would be underpowered for a full sized truck.

Everybody said a 4BT would be too underpowered for a one ton. Unless I need over 300 HP, everybody was wrong.

What about a 3BT Cummins?

Howdy and happy new year's.
I was doing the holiday visitation trip and talking to family member who has a 2011 BMW M5 SUV and it is a diesel. He told me that he towed a car on a trailer with this thing and got about 21 mpg doing it. I don't know spit about beemers or diesels but I wondered if such a power plant and trans would be good for my '65 'burb. Anybody here know about this engine and trans and if it would be a feasible swap? Thanks in advance.

I think that it might be cool to put together a hybrid exotic if it did the job. Learned that they are 6 cylinder but in the size SUV they come in should be a good fit in a '65 compartment. Just brain stormin'

Your going to cut up a 20k + suv for a project? The engine and trans alone are probably worth 5-10k.

Anything is possible, how much money do you have?

The amount of wiring and computer problems would make your head explode. Thats even if someone is capable of hacking to the computers so it will run stand alone. If you couldnt do that you'd have to have a custom harness made with a standalone ecu. Theres miles of wiring in those things.

The new twin turbo inline bmw diesel is a pretty badass engine. I think the 2011 was the previous generation, single turbo.

Really, you think I would go and cut up a beemer to get it's engine? Don't know about the Detroit area, but down here in Texas we have these places called "wrecking yards".

Let's keep it civil. So, Mr.HemiChallenger71, do you think it's stupid when someone buys a brand new hemi srt8 and guts it and sticks a CR 5.9 and tubs it for a race truck? You can probably buy a wrecked/killed Mercedes SUV and gut it too. It's all in what a person wants. There's no reason a person couldn't take everything from that Mercedes and put it in an older body/chassis. It's happened several times with other high tech vehicles. Don't kill others' ideas. You sound like the die hard Corvette guys that see my Vette.

there is a fair aftermarket and performance bmw crowd, but i dont know how much tweaking is going on with the diesels.

also, anything with that pretty blue and white emblem does mean a wallet will be getting lighter.

my concern with trying to swap the drivetrain from one of those would be the transmission. you can hang an engine in a frame pretty easy, but i dont know how the trans would work. the X series suvs are AWD and i think it may be all integrated. i dont know enough of the bmw stuff to know what solutions there are or are not for that family of engines. could be a completely normal trans from some other application could work. i would do a whole boatload of looking and reading before i dropped any cash.

i have also never driven the diesel but BMW is known for torque. i bet it would push around a fairly light older truck in a pretty fun way.

Its your comment. I call it how I see it. All I said was no and you made a remark.

At least ryanroo stepped back and thought about things before asking about a bmw diesel swap.

You can do anything you want, just depends how much money you have. I doubt many people here have the money and time that would be involved with a electronically controlled BMW diesel swap.

Neat? yes. Practical? No. Cost effective? No and it never will be.
For what that engine will cost you can buy a new VM motori v-6 smog legal crate engine and trans and probably have more power too.

ryanroo, I agree completely. It would be a really off the wall swap and I am just trying to learn about those engines. I was afraid that they only offered AWD so that would be a problem to overcome. I have also heard that the diesels that they offer in those Mercedes vans might be something to investigate.
