Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
That's good to hear about the Keyparts....it seems everybody has an opinion on who makes the best, from the results I have seen on yours,
Keyparts looks like the route I will take. I am going to brace mine up for sure thanks for the advise. I can't wait to get started with the replacement of parts as opposed to the removal of rusted out scrap metal!! I am always amazed at the speed everybody else gets things done....seems it takes me forever to get anything/nothing done. |

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Hate to hijack the thread. But on the repop panels, I think what everyone may forget to take into account is the numerous plants these trucks were built in (you never know if stamping dies were altered in one plant or another, and in how many different ways), and the sheer volume of these trucks that were built over the years (stamping dies will wear over time). What may fit with very little adjustment on one truck may need a lot of massaging to fit another.
Love your build, nice to see junior wanting to get in and help!!!

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Well I didn't want to take the windshield out but I ended up having to and it's probably for the best anyways. When I took the dash apart I noticed the metal under the dash looked oily and it felt oily. I then began to look around the perimeter of the windshield and noticed it was oily all around the windshield. Since I plan to paint the inside of the cab there is no way you could get all that oily residue off for primer or paint to stick so I pulled the windshield. It looks like they put grease all around the windshield when they installed it?? It feels like grease and is colored like peanut butter. I noticed the same color stuff when I removed the door seals but that stuff is rock hard.
I was also worried about finding more rust after I removed the windshield but it's completely rust free inside and out!!! Can't wait to start bolting parts back on instead of taking them off!! LOL You can see how oily it is especially near the wiper motor. It's like this the whole width of the dash. |

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Considering how rusty the floor was that grease around the windshield saved tons of body work.
That windshield seam area looks like new. |

You got that right!! After I cleaned the seam area of all that gunk the channel looks brand new. About the only perfect spot on the cab!! LOL

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Well it's been about a year since I started this project. Thought I'd do a little video of the build so far. Don't care for the music but Youtube wouldn't allow the Lynyrd Skynyrd song I originally tried to upload the video with! LOL

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Well it's officially a frame off restoration and my first one at that! I did it all by myself too with the help of the engine lift. I built a jig and bolted it to the lift. Worked nice! Need to build a stand for the cab now. Bought some 5 1/2 caster wheels from Harbor Freight. Just wish I had a bigger garage. LOL

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
No turning back now! The cab lift looks like it made things easy. I am going to build me a new one to put the cab back on my original was made from scraps and not long enough. I was able to make it work because I had the rocker off.

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Yep no turning back now! LOL The only thing that was difficult about taking the cab off the frame was when I went to set the cab down on the floor. The legs of the engine hoist go more than half way under the cab but I was able to use blocks of wood between the legs so I could get the lift out from under the cab.

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Thanks and welcome to the forum! When you start the restoration of your 64 be sure to start a build thread and post some pictures. This is my first full restoration and this forum has been a huge help to me.

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Hey Mikes66, what were the dimensions of your stand? I need to build one for my 65 and this one looks like what I need. Thanks!

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Sure it's 21 inches tall from the floor to the top with the wheels, 37 inches wide and 52 inches long. I used 5 1/2 caster wheels from Harbor Freight. If you build one buy 4 caster wheels for each corner. I used only 2 caster wheels and 2 non caster wheels. Made it harder to move it around although it wasn't too bad. If I had to build it over again I wouldn't have built it so high because it's going to make it harder to tip the cab onto it's back or forward onto the firewall.

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
Got the rear cab supports in. The reproduction supports are terrible in my opinion but it came out pretty good I think. That was the last of the rust repair on the floors!! Wire brushed the underside of the cab tonight and man the undercoating that's on the floors just won't come off. Not sure what to do there. Do I need to worry about getting it all off? I'd like to primer it, seam seal all the joints, and then I plan on using a bed liner coating.

Re: Mike's 66 C10 Short Step Build
I've been looking at options to blast most of my gunk off the bottom of the truck as well as old paint...ran across this today on Youtube where a guy made a dustless blaster using a pressure washer and sandblaster together...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUx1RZKfB-E Here is another that looks pretty promising from Eastwood... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXLW3y2gJhc |
