Why don't you just keep things simple? The more people that chime in, the more confusing it will be.
Go with your 350 idea. Hop the motor up a bit if you want to. It sure won't be a fitment issue. Keep the transmission simple, with fewer electronics. I did an NP 440/MY 6 tranny for my 383 small block. Used the bell housing shown above and the GM version bolts right up. .73 od on 4th gear and it just plain works. You can find this transmission out there still (s-k speed had four of them still) and they are reasonably affordable. You may have to scrounge for the Hurst Shifter but you'll find it!) There is a thread here on the forum on this tranny. A bit old school but that's the whole point. Simple works!!! I lol see if I can find my old thread and bring it back up... Tom

Tom, after reading your post, transmission nightmare and reading till almost 1 am about the np400, that don't sound like simple to me. Lol. This just don't sound like the trans for me. I'm a long way from that point right now, so got plenty of time to find what will work best for me. Thanks to all for all the input.

In some ways, you're right. Locating the parts were tough. The installation was about the only easy part.

454 bbc and tremec is simple.
 How about a 400 sbc? Not many use those. 327 is cool. Buddy of mine just found a 69 vette 327. Those were 300 hp and torque monsters. Guy had one in a 65 GMC 1 ton and man that thing would haul.

Pick n pull didn't pay off today. 1 s10 t5, only no speedo cable. A couple prospects on motors. Gotta go back Thursday when got more time and run some casting no,s to see if the one is 350 or 400 SB. Its in a 2500 or 3500 work truck. For whatever reason, all vin no,s are gone off the truck as well as emblems.
