Nice transformation! Gotta be proud of a trophy, too!

Re: 1971 C-10 Cheyenne

Enjoying this build - aside from all the obvious work, I see lots of nice little touches.
I like the look of your radiator. Whose is it? and how do you like fit, finish and function? Looks like a Griffith performance fit?
Thanks.

Thank You.

It is a Griffin, when I bought it they were called direct fit but now when I look at my order history at Summit Racing it says performance fit. It is a combo unit with the fans set up for the LS swap so both inlet and outlet are on the passenger side along with a port for the steam vent. I did have to modify the upper mounts by raising them .5".

It has been in the for about 4000 miles.

As for fit and finish I sent the first one back due to poor fit at the filler neck. I've used Griffin in offroad trail rigs and they are ok. I like Ron Davis radiators better but for this application the Griffin is doing great so far.

What I've seen with the Griffin units cracking or splitting is having them mounted to rigid in these trucks as they flex so much the radiator needs to be able to move around.

Guess what, radiator is leaking where three tubes meet the tank. 4500 miles on the radiator and the mounts are loose enough to where you can wiggle the radiator around pretty good. It'll go back to Griffin for repair but it's not going back in the truck. I'm looking at three options RnD Fab and Entropy both sponsors here on the board or Ron Davis who we have used in many offroad race cars. The RonDavis is $1340 with fans, Entropy is $1060 for the big 1000hp unit and $860 for just a slightly smaller unit both with fans, the RnD Fab is $450 for just the rad and I'm think of going this route and reusing the twin Spal fans from the current Griffin Unit.

Re: 1971 C-10 Cheyenne

Yeah, I ended up replacing my Griffin with my original radiator (thank goodness I held on to it). My local radiator shop pressurized the Griffin radiator in a tank of water and it was obvious that the epoxy just doesn't hold up. They cleaned the original radiator for me and its worked great now for months. The dual electric fans and shroud fit right on the original 4 core and keeps the 402 cool even with the a/c running. I guess the original belt driven fan and clutch just wasn't enough to cool the big block after rebuild and boring of .30 over. I would highly recommend using the original radiator over an aluminum when possible.

Good info here. I plan to use my original. Not a pretty piece, but a functional one.

I don't have the original radiator but I could get one. All the companies I listed sell fully welded aluminum units so they should hold up better than the epoxy. I'm not sold on a given route at this point.

Truck has been back in the shop for a few months for another round of upgrades. Porterbuilt hood hinges, new safety harness, roll bar/cage, straighten front frame rails, new transmission, paint touch up, etc. Nick has started to race the truck in some autocross events and it's been to a few more shows including the Autorama World of Wheels in Kansas City where it got 3rd in nostalgia truck.

The stock did not clear the LS but I used custom mounts so I don't know if using someone's mass produced mounts would work. We are switching this truck over to hydroboost in the next few weeks in prep for the turbo to come soon.

10-4. I had planned on using stock clam shells with adapter plates. What booster did you buy?

It's a bracket, booster, MC kit from Summit racing. I can get the part# if you would like it.

Great job on your build with your son.
Back on 03-29-2016, 05:49 AM you posted a picture of the ring to mount a factory fuel module for the 5.3.
Did you make this part or purchase it?
I have been looking for a way to mount a factory fuel module.

I got the mounting ring from www.liquidironindustries.com I don't know if it's shown on their sight so you may have to contact them about it.

Re: 1971 C-10 Cheyenne

Been a while since I updated this.

We took the truck on the Hot Rod Power Tour again this year, 2984 miles total that included a stop on the way home to run Tail Of The Dragon. Also I wrote an article about our trip for 4 Low magazine. The most notable part of the HRPT was blowing up the posi unit which lead to clutch material damaging the bearings, ring/pinion and getting to rebuild it which included a new carrier, R&P, and all new bearings in a parking lot with parts and some tools from summit and a few more tools from harbor freight. The truck is getting new seats and a turbo this Fall/Winter.

Any update brotha?Awesome father/son build. Curious to see your hydroboost setup. I am starting to accumulate all the final pieces to finish my LS swapped c10. Will most likely end up purchasing a RnD radiatior/fan kit as well.
