Re: shaking all over the place?
If you go lsd that replaces the carrier, which includes the spider gears.
Not sure how much just a carrier would cost but even if it is half the price of an Lsd how much cooler will you feel doing burnouts with both tyres.... P. |

Re: shaking all over the place?
Here is a suggestion. Get a premium membership and post a wanted ad in the 60 to 66 section and the 67 to 72 section. There are a lot of folks here with a ton of stuff and I'm sure you can find what you need to get up and going. For the correct carrier you need to know what gear you have.

he says it was good on his 63 and for the price, it's worth the risk. Its only 30min away form where I live. So i'm picking it up tomorrow and take it to the guy who has my axle. he will take the bits off this new axle (because the owner cut the brackets off to use on his 5 lug axle) and check all is good and put in my axle. as a backup I have the big swapmeet on Sunday as well. so.. all might be good in the end!

Re: shaking all over the place?
You will need to check if it has 17 or 30 splines. If it has 17 you will need to use the axles out the new one.

Re: shaking all over the place?
It's a 12 Bolt axle, thought 12 bolt were all 30 spline?
But anyway if it's not yes it's a case of swapping everything. The guy rebuilding my axle will look into that. He builds drag strip race cars so he knows more than me that's for sure lol

Re: shaking all over the place?
Nope the early 12 bolts were 17 spline. So that 63 housing may have 17 in it. Yours should have 30 spline. Axles should be 30.5" long in both.

Re: shaking all over the place?
Ohh ok, 17 spline I'm guessing it's weaker than the 30?

Smaller diameter on the 17 spline also.

Re: shaking all over the place?
So.. another question.
Let's say I have a 30 spline and this other axle is 17 spline. Can I take all the internals from the 17 and fit in my 30 axle casing?or nothing will fit?

Re: shaking all over the place?
No, it has to all be 30 spline or all be 17 spline.
The splines are on the end of the axle (male) the 3rd member that holds the ring gear on has female splines - Due to the interior gears (spider gears) being splined. Think I wrote that right. There is a good pic of the axles next to the spider gears that go inside the carrier: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cl...del/c10-pickup

Re: shaking all over the place?
I believe you can swap your 30 spline spider gears over and use the earlier carrier in your original axle housing.

I understand that 17 spline shafts will not go on 30 spline spider gears, but seeing as my spider gears are all gone, as well as the carrier, my actual question was if I could get everything off the 17 spline axle casing and put in the 30 spline axle casing. (for the only reason that the 17 spline axe has had its brackets cut off)

Re: shaking all over the place?
ah cool.. you doing the opposite of me, you are doing 30 splines in what was a 17 spline axle right?
due to cost I'm going the other way... 17 splines in what used to be a 30 spline axle..

Re: shaking all over the place?
If Chevy Mike says you can, then you can. He knows more than I do, I wouldn't know that. This is my first 12 bolt.

What I recommended was to move all of your 30 spline spiders gears into the 17 spline carrier (which makes it a 30 spline now). From what I read, your carrier is bad, not the gears. If the 30 spline gears are bad, use the good carrier and buy the 30 spline gears, keeping your original axle shafts.

Re: shaking all over the place?
Hi chevy_mike, yes that's exactly what my axle rebuilder said.
When I first posted I thought the axle carriers were different, therefore why I said swap the whole thing. but then been in contact with him and he said exactly the same, we can just swap the carrier as that's what's gone on mine. He has also said this: the only note of caution is that there are two carrier styles depending on the gear ratio fitted (3.73 and numerically lower, or 3.92 and numerically higher), so it might just be worth checking this out. The worst case scenario is we can fit the ring and pinion set that comes with this axle if the carrier is the wrong type, you will simply have a different gear ratio to what you have now. --------------------

Re: shaking all over the place?
Yep, your builder is correct. Most likely the carriers are the higher ratio as many of these trucks end up with 4.10 gears.

Re: shaking all over the place?
Well... it's all good!!
Picked the new axle today and dropped at builders. He quickly opened it to check it over and says all is in very good condition. Side gears, spider gears, lock pin etc.. It is a 17 spline so he will change things over so I can keep my 30 spline axle shafts. Also he checked the gearing and it's the same as my axle, result!!!!! Should be done in a couple of days.
