I am glad for you that things seem to be turning around, damn thats a lot of power! I still will stick by my earlier comments about not buying a crate and going to a local engine builder but am very happy your saga is nearing and end, the fun should start soon!

Mike, that is unbelievable man! I can't wait to see and hear that thing. When you have it rolling around again, let us know how it feels getting on the freeway, that should put you in your seat and get a lot of onlookers in the process. Oh man!

Just a quick change...663hp at 5800...redline is 6800 and it was 625lb/ft at 4800...original mark was 502/567.

Interesting to note the pump gas 572 is 620/650.

I guess I really need to get cracking on the posi now.

Hey Miket that is some good #'s!!! PHR did a dyno test as is on a 572 that came out at 701HP-forgot the torque. Said they got in touch with GM and was told that they rate them low so they with always be as rated. Put a Eaton Posi unit (comes complete) under mine. Just removed my ring gear from old unit and installed on new unit. Added new bearings ,used same side shims and reinstalled. Works fine-leaves 2 nice black streaks now. LOL. First time you rap on it lets us know how far the wooowww meter climbed. Good luck.

How much extra does it cost to have them dyno your crate engine?
Also if you had a choice which would be better, having them dyno it, or take the engine to an engine shop and having them go through the whole thing to make sure everything is to spec?

I believe Sallee charges $450 for the dyno which they video tape. Based on my experience with Sallee, if you buy your motor from them, have them dyno it before shipping. That way they are responsible for it before things get worse.

After being out of town for a few weeks, I finally got home yesterday and was able to read the dyno numbers from the pull...pretty interesting....

From 2900 rpm through 6100 rpm the motor made no less than 560 lb ft of torque...pretty flat...but with good gains starting at 4400 and running through 5200 with a peak of 633...

however horsepower really builds from 4000rpm (433 hp) through 6100 rpm with a peak at 663.6.hp. Unfortunately it looks as though two mods will be required after this....stall converter and probably hydroboost....as it seems I have no vac.

I will get my truck back on Monday....will update then.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Picked up my truck tonight. Wow...man....it really scoots. I couldn't really do much cause it was raining....and no posi...but 1/4 throttle roll ons at 50 get you to 100 pretty quick.

This sounds funny but the motor sounds much better...smoother...it doesn't sound like it's fighting itself...even though it has a much bigger cam.

I do know that a stall converter and posi are in order...

All in all I am really happy and feel very satisfied with Sallee Chevrolet....I even got to watch my Dyno on videotape!

little bit of info I found on the scoggin dickey web site:

Explantion of why 502 crate engines consume oil and the proper fix.

All 502's built since the inception during the mid-80's have used a unique ring combination of 2.0mm/1.5mm/4.0mm. The factory installed 4.0mm oil ring is a low tension ring. It is used to reduce frictional horsepower losses. Oil consumption is a natural characteristic of this type oil ring.

When it is time for a 'freshen-up' on your 502, we recommend and sale the Speed-Pro high performance file-fit ring set which includes a standard tension oil ring for improved ring sealing and oil control. With the use of this ring set, your oil consumption will return to a normal level of about 1 quart per 1,000 miles.

Dont know if you guys already knew that but supposedly if you get the replacement ring set they sell, it will fix the problem. Sorry but this is the only kinds of help I can offer (SHHHHH I know nothing, but dont tell the wife!)

Doesn't help much does it? Mine uses 2 qts. per 1000, so that is alot of expense to go to for only $1.50 savings per 1000 miles. I would have to drive 100,000 miles to save $150.00. Surely GM can come up with a better ring then that.

Man, now I'm scared! Picked up a ZZ4 for a friend of mine, cause I could get it cheaper than he could. It's in my garage awaiting him to bring out his pickup to install it. I hope all is OK!!!!!

You are defenitly gonna need some posi....my 3.07 geared truck has a hard enough time hooking up with a little 350....i can only imagine how the built 502 would run!
