Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

I came up with N idea for the PCV valve and vent "manifolds". A friend Conputerized them and 3d printed them.

Here is my ruff idea.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

Here is the finish product. The manifolds and valve covers will get painted grey, the PCV valve and breather elbow will be black to match the hoses.

I opened the hood dusted off the motor and swapped the valvcovers. I really like it. Simple solution to a problem. I'm excited to see how they work!

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

So back on Feb 8th I was cranking the engine in my 66. (To make oil psi so I could get ready to start it up) The new Napa starter quit working ( a coupe 5 second bursts with cooling in between then a 15 second burst and that was it. . After verifying I had power at the starter and solenoid I removed the starter and returned it back to napa. They game me a new starter and I noticed right away the power bolt didn't have the jamb night tight on the power post.

Not posting to complain just trying to provide the real world expirience.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

After replacing the starter I pulled the distributor to make a timing adjustment and a problem I have not experienced before was present. School was in session...the oil pump intermediate drive shaft came out with the distributor.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

After doing some research I realized the best solution was to pull the engine. That way I could pull the pan and oil pump and install the improved oil pump drive shaft.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

While the oil pump was off I decided to pull it apart and take a look. I decided to sand the machine surfaces to clean them up. 320 grit fist then 600.
Here is some before pics.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

After oil pump service I put the engine back together. I did spin it to make sure it made oil psi before it. Same off the engine stand. Here it is getting ready to come off the engine stand then last Sunday I reinstalled the engine back in the truck.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

Progress from Sunday.

First fire, my water temp gauge didn't come in. I'm hoping I'll have it by Tuesday so I can fill up the radiator with fluid. Currently the engine is just static timed with no vacuum advance hooked up. Just wanted to make some noise today.

Looks great. I hope mine looks similar with the grey and black components. Glad you got it running.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

I like to run a charging light on my old vehicle. It's more noticeable than a gauge. I made this 1 for my 1966. I had a cigarette lighter delete plug I figured I could drill out the center and trim off the rear step basically turn it into a bezel for my charge light.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

I was having clicking issues with the #2 starter. I tried a starter shim just to be sure, no change. I removed the starter took it back to NAPA returned it and bought a NEW 1 (no more reman's for me).

The NEW starter works GREAT!! Also the new starter comes with all the hardware and a dyno sheet!

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

Now with a consistently working starter I plumbed my H20 mechanical temp gauge filled the radiator and fired the motor. I ran the engine for a couple mintutes to get some heat in it. Alt is charging! And oil pressure seem great!(not sure how accurate the factory gauges is, but at least it's definitely showing it's making pressure even if the factory gauge is exaggerating a little bit we're doing great) (I usually run aftermarket gauges with numbers however this time I'm gonna just use the stock oil pressure gauge)

Also, I got a 14" x 3 air filter cleaned up my aftermarket air filter base and knocked a couple of the dents and fixed the snorkel opening damage. It still needs a coat of paint but really happy with the look and the fit!

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

Ran the engine today got some heat in it. Set timing, clutch is working! Oil psi is great and responsive to engine revs. Measure used for the drive shaft will order that tomorrow. Next is plumping the brake hard lines and bleeding!! Hope to drive truck out of side yard by next Sunday !

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

Ordered a driveshaft.
Had to trim the drive shaft slip yoke. This Saginaw 3 speed trans had 4" of spline, driveshaft had 6". Drive shaft would almost bolt it slip yoke was hitting something solid in the tail shaft.
Trimmed 1 " of the slip yoke. Install was a breeze and driveshaft still has room to travel.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

I ended up replacing all the brake hard lines and re routed rear brake line to driver side frame rail. I also put the brake proportioning valve under the cap on the driver side frame rail. I used a 1994 S-10 rear brake hose I made a little bracket for the rear brake hose to mount on the rear diff cover and I clearenced the lip on the cover. I was able to mount the rear brake like low so it will not interfere with the bed floor.

Re: Back to the basics...My 1966 C30 to C10 project.

I did clean out the interior, washed the floor, cut the gas tank brackets off. I went a grabbed the seat and installed it. I will lower the seat eventually and have it reupholstered later .
