Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
And a hefty scrub with 80 grit, 180, 220, 320, and 400, and it's ready for Epoxy primer. The outside is good, and the inside is good enough for bedliner.
Scrubbed the roof and hood down in anticipation for Slick Sand.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Body is sanded, needs a couple coats of epoxy, then Slick Sand. I don't want to spray this outside, so.....

Looks great man and seeing it on the dollies next to the counter really shows how low it is. Kinda amazing with these trucks how small the body seems after getting used to the newer trucks getting bigger with each generation.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Did a thorough wipe down today. Primer tomorrow.
Furnace filters on the top left feed air in, to row of furnace filters bottom right, which go into a "channel" up to the big ass barn fan in the peak of the ceiling. Nice negative pressure with the fan on the lowest setting. And, I drilled holes for a '98 GMC Yukon 3rd brake light.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Nice job on the paint booth! Did it have enough air movement to clear out the overspray?

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Yes, it was very acceptable. I really need a LOT more intake filter area (the big barn fan is trying to implode the booth, even on the lowest speed), but it was quite adequate.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Did some filler work today, and spot-primed. Hoping to pick up more furnace filters and spray Slick Sand tomorrow.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I continue to just look in and be amazed at your build.
The spray booth is something I will have create when I get to that point, both for decent air quality and to prevent my world from turning red.. The die you created for your logo is awesome, a friend made up his own replacement panels on a Mazda RX2 and it took a lot of figuring to get it all together. Thanks again for sharing.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Gallon and a quarter of Slick Sand. Golly that's not fun. Slick sand has a pot life of 45minutes, you can't leave it in the gun for more than 15, it's 31°C in the booth, and my scale lets me only mix a pint at a time (50:1 by weight). Made for a frustrating use of time, but it's sprayed. Now to let it cure for three days.

That looks good, your painting box is a stunner. Next week my hood is ready to paint EP and then the filler, I'm curious.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I've not used slick sand, how is it to shoot? Does it go on heavy or in light coats? Do you clean your gun between each batch?

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I cleaned the gun at every refill of the cup, because the goo was setting up inside. I left the gun in a bucket of lacquer thinner overnight to see if it will all come out/off today.
I used a cheap "on sale" Princess Auto (Harbor Freight) HVLP that came with a 2.3mm tip. You are going to WANT a 2.3mm tip. 15° increase in temperature gives half the cure time. You can't leave this in the gun more than 15 minutes, and my booth was 10° higher than room temp, so 15 minutes becomes 10 minutes. You gotta work fast. If you spray it down thick, you can get a reasonably smooth. If you spray it light, you're just going to be building up pebbles. Having said all that, this covers so well, that I needed very little filler. It is certainly nice to use to get that super straight finish.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I forgot I still had my Princess Auto 2.3mm HVLP soaking in Lacquer thinner.
Pulled it out and spent an hour or so picking out sort of soft Slick Sand from a lot of it. I think I saved it. Also surprised to find the "anodizing" was now gone. That was unexpected.

I know the feeling. I can only take it for a little while and have to work on something else for a while. Good luck.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I can understand you, I epoxy painted the hood, sanded and filled and sanded, now ready to fill. It was very warm again today, it will not be my favorite work.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Sprayed a bit of epoxy primer to cover some exposed metal, and provide a bit more "hide." Final sand next, then sealer and shoot.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Damn sir, what a great job you are doing! I have the makings for a booth just like yours. LOL I have 2 box fans with filters and inlet filters up top to draw the overspray down and out. You doing base then clear? I am doing single stage flat red. 1 less step BUT flats are not the easiest to lay down I hear. lucky for me, I am not going for the professional paint, just a garage guy paint. LOL

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Was away in Tofino BC for a holiday. Came back early because we picked up Covid. This is my second go of it in three months, we'll see how hard it is on my lungs this time.
Making some changes to the spray booth filtration, then do some sanding, and hopefully spray sealer and colour tomorrow.
