So I did my final speaker install in the doors.
I figured for some who may have never done this, I would include some photos of the process.

Firstly I am a huge fan of these foam baffles. They are not terribly expensive, but what they provide is beyond measure IMO. They help protect the backs of your speakers from water and dirt, particularly if you are mounting them in doors. They also provide the back compression your speaker needs to deliver a good, solid bass hit. Just think of a bass drum with one side missing, and you will understand the dynamics here.
In this photo my mounting holes are predrilled as I am going to use the factory mounting screws, and I perforated the baffle only enough to feed my speaker wires through one at a time.


Here we have the tools needed for this:
A screw driver (yes I am old and like things that turn with a button, instead of my wrist... dont judge me). I use the punch to help locate my screw holes, and assist in aligning the speaker/grille. The exacto knife for trimming the baffle afterwards.


I think it is important to note that this type of stuff should only be done at that stage where you know you are going to install it, and be done with it.
Here you can see I am trimming the baffle to the contours of the speaker grille. Why this is noteworthy is that if you disassemble this now, you will have to fight with it to get it to all line back up, and that is a hassle I try to avoid if possible.


And done.


Not much of an update, but it is what it is.
My carpet and deadner arrived a few days ago, and I have had the carpet in the living room relaxing. Our cat seems to think it is there for his personal comfort, but he has been a real sport in helping me to get it flattened out some.... I think there may be some video of him doing this.

I started a side project while I was waiting on the arrival of the new stuff, so I am endeavoring to complete that before I start back in on finishing my interior, but soon...... very very soon !!

You can google "foam speaker baffles" but Summit offers them so I just had them added to a recent order.
The 6x9 were $12 for the pair, and the 5" were $10 for the pair.

I learned about them when I did the stereo install in my Tempest.
The owner of Sound Decision in Lawton, OK brought them to my attention when I dropped $2100 on a system from his shop.
He said it would be a shame to not get the very best from that system by running my speakers without them.
If you look at my Tempest photos, I have 4" and 6x9" speakers in the cabin, and they are both equiped with these baffles.
The sound system in that car is just amazing to hear.

You will have to look way back, but I have the 1.5" spot tweeters in my domelight.

Ok guys, as I mentioned earlier I got onto a couple of side projects while waiting for my order from Brothers to arrive. Good thing I did too, as I realized I wanted to have all my cutting, shaving, painting et al: done before I installed the carpet. (less chance of messing up the shag...)

Some of you old timers to this build, and anyone who has braved the entire read recently, know I picked up some side views in the bone yard from a 70s era Ranchero. Upon researching it, I think it was a GT series like the Torino.
Anyways, the matter boils down to (believe it or not) the shape of the mirror itself.
We have all seen rectangles, ovals, and circle, but I had never seen mirrors shaped like these. Naturally I had to have them.....


Next was figuring out how to modify them to fit the coutours of my doors. Surprisingly, the makers of Fords and Chevys did not coroborate in their designs to make all this stuff interchangeable.
Go figure.
First task though was to figure out how to disassemble these bad boys.
They were originally color coded at the factory, but that had long since worn off, so priority #1 was to ensure everything was marked well to go back together right!
Red cable to red housing clamp, plain to plain, and blue to blue !!
The adjusting knob is tensioned by a pretty stiff spring inside this control housing, so to provide the initial slack needed, I pushed the control knob all the way in, and held the plunger in place with the forcep shown here left of the screw driver.
The screw driver was then used to gently pry the cable clamps open. I seriously over emphasized gently as I did this because I was not sure of the state of the metal, would it be cheap pot metal, or just old and brittle?
With those clamp spots opened, the cables had plenty of play to be easily disconnected from the control knob and disassembly continued without flaw.


Next up, I had to devise some adapters that would change the angle of the mirror housings to the line of the body, the pitch upon how they sat on the body, and their relation to line of sight from the driver seat.
With my pizza box, I came up with these:


Then this is what they looked like on initial mounting to the mirror housings and the pedestals:


In my next post I will show some side by side comparisons that will better illustrate why I did this.

Thank you for taking the time to check it out, seems you have had a full plate here lately! Wife and I just got down to Anchorage last week for the first time. Sure puts emphasis on how remote and how badly it sucks to be in Faribanks. Dont get me wrong the fine citizens of Fairbanks have a great community up here, but for a resident tourist like us, it certainly is hurting in the civilization offerings....
My best friend and childhood sweetheart has gone thru all of that what you have in the last year too, it sucks to hear when good people have to endure bad things.
Hopefully she will finish her thesis in the next year or two and earn her PHD.

On the left is the stock configuration of the mirrors, on the right with the adapters I made:




The goal here was to get the pedestals to be streamlined with the body coutours, and not be oblique in any way to the air flow.
I also wanted the top edge of the mirror housings to present a more or less level appearance.
