Re: How about some pics of '73-'87 Short Beds
Here's my 87, this is before I put a new bed on it. I have a another cab for it also. I think I'm going to redo alot of the metal work I've done. Since I went to work for a restoration shop here in Cincy, my standards have gone up, & I've learned that mig welding is a major no no for sheetmetal work!

Tig, & planish! Mig just adds metal, too much to grind when your done.

Re: How about some pics of '73-'87 Short Beds
most bodyshops here use mig welders , there special sort of migwelder though they bring less heat intoo the material and use a different wire think it has some tin in it , the current superthin sheetmetal and special aloys require use those types of welders
tig welding is wonderful but the metal needs to be verry clean to be able to lay a nice weld and repairing a run off the mill pre 80's rustbucket with a tigwelder......... i'm afraid it brings you more pain than gain . havent seen the state of youre truck when you had done the metalwork and before it went to paint but i might rather first grind out the filler pull out dents and work on my planischingskills before taking good metal out with a grinder and tigweld it its good practice and when it doesnt work you can allways grab the grinder and take the darn piece out

Re: How about some pics of '73-'87 Short Beds
We use a tig & planishing hammer so we don't have to grind hardly anything, & we don't have to use any plastic fillers like most bodyshops do! Almost all the premier shops out there do it this way.

Stock 15x8 with 60's,just like they did back in the day in North Carolina!!!
Nothing like 1970-1981 cars and trucks!!! I wish that I could find those old PLAYBOY Bunny air freshners. They were the BEST ever. |

Re: How about some pics of '73-'87 Short Beds
I just flipped through all 235 pages of this thread while waiting for account activation. Just as I reached the end I received the activated email, so here goes my first post. Long time lurker, first time member and poster. All these nice pickups here, figure I'd post mine so we don't all forget how the nice ones start.

Re: How about some pics of '73-'87 Short Beds
All right I'll try to post a couple of more pics.
Smokedog, I believe you a right, as far as a I can remember those are Stealth rims 20x8.5. They are a couple of years old now so I had a difficult time finding one more for a spare, but I did in the end. Hopefully one day there will be rear discs shining through! |
