Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Update:
So here are a few ideas of the aging I'm going for. Pic 1. Is done by layering a few colors first followed by corsets sea salt. Then black sprayed over that. Remove salt and reapply over the area you want exposed. And spray top coat. Pic 2. Was done with liquid latex. Pic 3. With sea salt again. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
I experimented with my tailgate using salt as well, but I have been trying to think of a method to use for the pieces that can't be set flat. (bed sides, cab, fenders...)
The only thing I can think of so far is either thick dish soap, or spray foam sprayed from a distance, but haven't tried yet. If you have any ideas, please share, yours looks great |

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Tempest67 yes I have a method for vertical panels.
I use liquid latex (used for Halloween makeup) it clings to the metal really well.the 3rd shot was with latex Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Mark, you may have to do a step by step how to on what you're doing...I'm guessing your spraying several diff colors then putting salt on it wet?..how are you removing the salt? Water ?...I think I follow the theory but not the steps..

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Greg as you requested.
Pic 1. And 2. Start by spraying a base coat color (used black because the original paint had this) Pic 3. The surface needs to be fairly flat so the salt will not fall off. Using water you simply sprinkle the salt on and wait till it dries. Pic 4. Using a airbrush mist or fog on your top color till it covers the undercoat. Pic 5. After your top coat dries you simply wipe it off. And it leaves a distressed look to the paint or "chipped" look. This is only the 1st way I tried this I will post more on the cab soon. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Thanks Dad, thanks Greg.
Pic 1. Another shot of front fender. Pic 2,3 and 4. This time I sprayed my base first and then used the liquid latex for the distressing. I know it looks like a lot of black but when it's sprayed it will not be as much. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
First 3 pics were after the orange was sprayed.
Pics 4,5. After the latex was removed, it reveals the final look, not a huge amount of distressed spots. Reason for this is the truck didn't have a ton in these areas when I bought it. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
pic 1. Last one of the reveal.
Pic 2. This is a pic of a pic taken of the truck before work was ever done to show the original look. Pic 3. The passenger side had damage from the door being flung open and didn't want to see any of that. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
looks great Mark,
I did almost the same process, but did not wet the salt. (as I had tailgate flat on bench) Step 1 paint tailgate flat black (looks shiny in pic, but paint still wet) Step 2 paint tailgate red oxide, and any other "rust color" you want (oranges, browns, yellows...) Step 3 sprinkle salt where you want rust to be seen Step 4 Paint entire tailgate with color of truck (mist a few coats to avoid salt from moving) Step 5 brush off salt and sand to desired look |

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Very nice!!
The trick with the salt is commonly used in the modelbuilding scene, works great. Haven’t seen it used on the real thing.

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
thanks tempest! Looks really nice. The reason I went the area first is so the salt stays still.
Kees yes that is correct on where the salt thing came from.

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
pic 1. This was after wetsanding the firewall and ready for paint.
Pic 2. I'm using shopline jb9300 basecoat it's a true jet black paint. Pic 3. Then I sprayed it with POR matte clear. Pic 4. This is the clear I'm using. It's really durable and cleaning it when it gets dirty is real easy as well. Pic 5. Finally coming together, will get the kick panel shot in bedliner and prep the doorjambs for paint. Mark
