As of right now, the concrete was done by another company and everything else has been me. Saving a ton of money on labour this way.

That it does. How do you juggle that with your day job? If I remember correctly, you do construction work on the daily. I'd imagine you work for a general contractor or an employer where you can get access to alot of the specialty tools needed on a project like this?

When I was doing major renovations on my house, I would come home from work and get something done. Weekends were working on the project as well. It got old. Wasn't near the amount of work you have. That's gotta be alot man. I believe in our area for a construction loan on a house, its only good for a year (completion of house in a year). Not sure how it is where you are. I'd imagine you guys want to move in ASAP. You guys sold your last home correct? Moved into an apartment for the time being? When are you guys hoping to be done?

I have actually taken a step back from being on the tools all the time in an effort to maintain my body. I work for a lumber yard now and my tools I have collected from my years in construction are finally being used for my own job. That is correct about the 1 year to be completed, although we are able to get a start before we get the bank involved so I'm hoping to have a 14-16 month timeline. The goal is to move in as soon as possible so I am there basically whenever in not working or sleeping. We are currently staying with the inlaws during this process.

Nice. That's gonna be pretty cool when its all done and you can say you built it yourself. I bet working in the trades, you probably have some friends or people you know that can help you out with the plumbing/electrical/hvac. Or if you are hiring all that out, you probably know who does quality work.

Absolutely. I've always to build my own house since I got into construction back in 2013. I've had alot of help from family with the grunt work so far. I do have friends in other trades but none are far enough along to want to take on a whole house at this point so I've gotten quotes based on recommendations from them on the work I can't do. We just finished standing the second floor joists today minus the section over the garage. Needing to start building garage walls soon so that will be an exciting step. Then I can start to picture getting my truck back into a workable state!

The remaining second floor joists are in and the floor is sheathed! A bit more layout and I can start building some second floor walls

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

The house is progressing along nicely! I've been so busy building that I haven't had time to post. The second floor walls are mostly complete now. The roof trusses showed up yesterday afternoon so tonight I was getting the first batch of them ready to take up with this awesome vintage forklift from 1975 I was blessed with for a few weeks! Gotta love it when things like this work out.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

Thank you!

Tonight I finally got the last roof plane sheathed. It officially looks complete from the outside as far as framing goes. There are a few more items to take care of before it is 100% done framing on the inside though.

I am absolutely amazed at the size of my new garage space! Can't wait to get the truck in here.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

You guys moved in yet?

Is framing all done now for the plumbers to start? You will have to snap some pics of the electric service when they get their stuff wrapped up. Im interested to know how our codes differs from yours up there. We are required to have a main disconnect outside now as well as numerous circuits having extra protection (afci and gfci).

Haha well with how often I'm there, I might as well move in at this point

Plumbing and Electrical are both roughed in now. Our service has a box outside the house next to the meter that I believe has a **** off in it but it is inside of a sealed box that is illegal to open or tamper with. Only the service provider can go into it. There is a main breaker in the panel in the basement. We require GFCI on anything exterior or anything near water (bathrooms, kitchens, etc) I believe that all bedrooms and a certain percentage of the circuits in the main areas are required to have an AFCI breaker.

My insulators are starting this week and I'm currently installing the Soffit and the Fascia. I'm pushing really hard to ensure we get heat in the house before the cold weather sets in.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

Insulation is now mostly complete. The attics get blown in insulation later this week now that I've got all the ceilings on the second floor and the garage boarded. I ended up buying a product for the garage ceilings and shared walls between the house and garage called Sonopan. It is a sound deadening material that I've heard good things about. Guess I'll see how it works for myself now. Hopefully I can work in there without bothering the wife and kids too much. This was a bit of a problem in the old house.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

Looking good! I looked at your picture of the electrical service box outside. Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like its just has a meter in there. Especially if its tagged where only the power company can access it. Our code down here now requires a main breaker outside. Just means more for us to install and added cost to the homeowner.

Looks like your moving along nicely. Did you claim the third stall for your pickup yet?? Better make space for the toolboxes as well! Looks like you will have some room for them in the double stall

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

Things are progressing nicely with the house. I have finished installing all three overhead doors now and am starting to get some siding up! We also have the basement concrete floor all done now as well. Hoping the weather plays nice so I can get a decent amount of it done this year. At least there is still a ton of work to do inside as well so if the weather doesn't cooperate, I can keep making progress regardless.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

Still working away on the house. I got a pretty good amount of the siding up before the weather took a turn for the worst. Now that it's crazy cold outside, I have shifted to inside work. I have the second floor drywall up and I am currently working on taping and filling all the joints. Not too many pictures of this process as it is entirely boring to take pictures of. Hoping to have the second floor in primer before the new year!
