I should have thought of that

I was lucky to get past security. Buddy of mine got the 5th degree at every checkpoint.

Updates forthcoming...

I spent the whole day reading all 42 pages of this build thread (off and on of course). This car (and your fabrication) is a work of art.

This is the most amazing build! I just did the same thing as rockasilly, 42 pages of reading a computer hurts the eyes! I cant wait to see if finished as I am sure you are!

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Update

Some of the smallest jobs are the most difficult. This little update kicked my arsenic... But by the time I got it working on the drivers side I nailed it the first time on the passenger side. No pain no gain

Finishing the rear sway bar, all I had left to do for mock up was to find a solid mounting point for the end-links. In order to keep them as long as possible (closer to factory f-body length anyway) while setting the bar close to level at ride height I chose to sink the upper bushing into the frame rails.

Open 'er up:

Poor man's lathe makes another cameo:

Upper mount plate fab'ed and basking in the aroma of my morning fuel:

F-Body end-link spacer tube shortened 3/4"

Assembled (excess bolt thread later trimmed)

Here's the part that tested my dedication to quality. These "frame rails" are pretty thin. You could call it thick sheetmetal (maybe 12-14ga). Not sufficient for tapping. Without access to the back side I came up with this method for securing a nut on the backside. After many failed attempts I found the winning combo was a larger hole and hotter welds:

Plug welds were ground smooth and plates bolted up with stainless pan-head allens:

Side shot:

Other side took 1/4 the time...

Very nice work on the rear sway bar mounts. I like this idea and hope to steal it in the future......need to score a new mig though, not too sure tig would work too good.

"Some of the smallest jobs are the most difficult"

I think the majority of us here can relate to the above statement and certainly appreciate not only your patience and approach to this build but also your outstanding skills.

MIG for sure. Need that wire to strike on the nut before anything else.

I hope that holds and doesn't tear the metal, I have to admit I cringed a little seeing that. I have done "temp" repairs in industrial settings that were left in place as permanent and they failed in that fashion. I suppose it depends on the stress put on it. Ah, what am I worried about, it'll be fine.

Nice work on securing the nut.

Funny sidenote - since I've been following this thread, I've kept my eyes peeled for Sunbeams. Thought I saw one the other day, but is was a "classic" ~67 Volvo 123.

Man, this is a cool build! Just found it and read it today. Definitely subscribed.
I have a friend building an MGB with S2000 motorvation.
http://www.motorwayltd.com/project-keating.html
He's the 1 man fabrication team at the shop.
Maybe you guys could run em when they're finished. I'd like to see that.
I'll send him a link to this build.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Wow, they started with a super clean shell! That bolt-in IFS is very nice, but I'm lovin the super-narrowed S2000 IRS. I seriously considered going that route (had one on hand) but ultimately decided to roll with the K.I.S.S. approach (for once). I'm wondering if he'll have to shorten the shift rod and relocate the shifter fwd at all like I did. Would love to run em some day. Ft. Collins is an awesome town and now I have yet another reason to visit

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

We got to check the Herald out when it was just a painted body tub, it looked good inside and out.
Frank is a hell of a craftsman for sure. I'd give him carte blanche with any of my stuff.
That MG tub is a brand new re-pop. I guess the whole damn car is available in pieces brand new.

I just spent the time to view all 43(!) pages on this thread, and I have to say that I am completely speechless........

You have done an AMAZING job on this project. I am going to subscribe to this thread for two reasons:
1): To continue to see your amazing progress
2): To use it as a motivational tool whenever I need a creative nudge

Keep up the stellar job!

sorry guys. The pics were lost during transfer (for real). Now the rear end is stripped down and danglin from the cherry picker. It'll be painted this week and that should break the seal on finishing this project. The smell of paint does wonders for the motivation.
