Technology Woes...

I think my dad summed it up quite accurately once, saying we were not born to be idle.


Had a job interview yesterday, so the past week was focused on getting to know everything and prep for the interview.

Back to normal for a bit today before having friends over for a BBQ

Used my stick welder as the wind was pumping this afternoon, amazed at just how well it worked at getting the two rims glued together.



Then cut a bit of electrical conduit and some rebar, bent like a staple to start forming the hinge.
Also cut a bit out of the rim edge.



I will be welding the pipe to one side of the stoking door. Allowing the door to swing around the hinge.



So I pre-cut the door, leaving the corners uncut, so that I can weld the hinge and supports as well as the latch in place before releasing the door.



Back to the Mig welder in the garage, I used off cut bits of steel from the towbar I made for the truck to strengthen and stabilise the platte and support that will be welded to the bottom of the one rim, in order to create a coal basket.

This will allow the rims to be rotated, but also dismantled for storage or moving about.



Hope to finish this job some time tomorrow as well.

Boot fair bounty for today.......

Included 1.5meter of 200mm wide 60 grit paper for 50p got to be useful somewhere.

American plates now make £5.00 and more at swapmeets, EBay etc and and even bootfairers do not play stupid anymore.

So I was chuffed to get these three for £5.00 today.

The Texas one at the bottom is unusual to me, not seen one before, so any identification appreciated, as to its use and allocation.





A job lot of long, very long domed headed bolts around 150-250mm ling and a few random bits. Including a nice plastic box £4.00 the lot.

Means I have the new bolts to mount the bed back on with the new wood once done.




A load of weld through, zinc primer, degreaser, and spray on contact adhesive at 50p per can....... Gotta be worth having.

Half for my garage, half for mate Martin's




Good condition Suzuki 600cc exhaust, with removable baffle which means it can be modified and also opened up a lot more to anti-social thuggery levels........ Paid £4.00 for it, though I would not sell it for less than three times that.

Had a very similar one to that, off a 600cc CCM on my Transit with a straight through pipe from the 1800cc Zetec it had fitted.







Gentle Dremmel persuasion on the little Allen head screws and the whole thing dismantles.




Next up, go back and finish off the burner I am making for Hannah.

Carrying on with the welding and making it up as I went along this afternoon, I finished the job just after 6pm. A lot longer than planned.



Welded the "hinge" into place and cut the door free.



Then cleaned up all the edges, properly so Hannah would not slit her wrists while making a fire.



Some more scrap coming to the rescue, an old Chinese gong stand that has lived in the garden the last 5 years, donating bits to this build.



One of my problems was to make a functional lock for the door, to keep it in place, so the gong stand donated the handle for this, it also donated the door handle, part of the problem with this sort of burner is the heat generated and also fed into the handles, hopefully Hannah will be able to open and close the door without burning her fingers.




Eventually welded the buckled base plate to the rim, a lot of filling needed, but happy with that.



Also added Hannah's initials on the bottom, no idea why, thing is too heavy to steal anyway.



Finished wood burner. Door shut.



Door open, and yes, there is sufficient of a tray to retain ashes and coals.




Happy overall, made entirely of scrap, and hopefully she will not dump it before winter.

OK......

So I lied.

I went out and bought a tin of silver VHT paint on the way home tonight.

Also welded plates over the bottom holes to keep most of the fire and coals inside the burner.

Then wire brushed, and flap wheeled the outside before turning it upside down, painting the undersides, followed by to upper sides.






Not everyone will get it finished in paint, but I am happy that for a girls back yard, it will be the right thing.

Also got a call from the agency I dealt with the last week with a job offer to a new job.

Looking forward to a new challenge.

I hear some of you say, but I also know that most people on here are not one dimensional, and some have had other stuff before, or have other interests.

I guess the old saying of "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" comes into play here, but worth showing here for you guys.

I know cars are worth what people are prepared to pay for them. So I am looking at buying this for a sensible price, unfortunately there is the $3500.00 import costs......... But I want to buy this truck from a desert area in South Africa. It comes with 2.5liter V6 engine, no rust visible and according to the seller, supposed to have 57k km on the clock, which I would guess is 100k km or 60k miles short, so probably done 100k miles in real terms or 160k km, then import it and add it to my garage with the Chevy C10.

I had a 1982 model as a student and still miss it today.

If it is as good as the seller says, not needing bodywork and capable of driving straight up to Edinburgh tomorrow, it means I could use it, but also sell it on and get my money back if I wanted to.

So, take a look.

I love it! I remember the P100's with a mark 4/5 front sheet metal but I've never seen a pick up with a mark 3 front end. My first car was a mark 3, 2.0 XL (oh nostalgia....it's not what it used to be)

I know there is a strong following building around Mk3's now as most rusted away, or were killed off in banger racing in the 80's

So this one would be rare, but also coming from a desert type dry area it should be very good, according to the owner who I spoke to yesterday.

FREEEEEE IS GOOD !!

Well, that's my opinion.

I popped into the scrap yard on the way home tonight to show the guys Hannah's burner pics.

So Glen took me into a shed and said he had seen something I may like and put it aside.

And yes, I could have it of nothing. So it will be needing a new home soon.

Three wheeled, rear pivot steering trike, what's not to like??




While in the shed I asked if hey ever saw vertical compressors like in the States, and he said no, but they had one that was missing a wheel and worked fine, would I be interested? I asked how much and he said "what do you want to pay?" So I offered £10.00 which was probably double what they would want, but I often get bits of metal and stuff for nothing there, so fair is fair.

Deal done.

Brought it home, cleaned it up and tested it, perfect.

Plan is to see over the weekend if I can move the head unit and fit it on top of the cylinder and turn it into a vertical compressor and then fit it into the replica petrol pump I built last year.






Other side......




While out at work today, I took a 1/2 mile detour to pick up the biscuit jointer I bought on Monday evening off EBay. Paid £35.00 for it but renting would be £26.00 per day.

Now I can use it for making up the load bed of he truck from the oak strips I previously cleaned up and saved for this job.

The machine was "used" but it looked like new to me.



Remember this lot??

Wow ,you find the coolest stuff for the best price of anyone I have ever seen. I love the truck you are thinking about buying as well as the 3 wheeler .The fire pit turned out great too ,I may have to build one of those someday .I cant wait to see the end results from that new jointer .Oh I almost forgot ,CONGRATS on the new job.

In my days as a mechanic for the local Ford dealership I used to PDI the P100's. Hardest job was getting the chains cut off where they had been lashed down on the ships...

This one is in Scotland.

I have a friend in South Africa who will be going out to take a look for me next week, if it has not sold, and hopefully getting better photos all round.

He is much easier pleased than me, but still got to be cheaper than flying out there.

If I were to buy it, there is still the cost of importing and registering here to contend with.
