Re: My 52 GMC Build

Thanks Cory

Well last Saturday, I took the truck over to my friend Joe's work to do an oil change and look over the truck before our big trip.
Found the rear shocks where a bit loose in the bottom mount. We ended up pulling the bottom bolt to do a touch of clearance grinding and found one shock had no gas pre-load. I got a new one today under warranty.
This week I also found a glow plug died on me so got a new one. Over all I think she is ready.
I mapped out our trip and it comes in at 2100mi pulling my 18' trailer.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Question for you all. I'm looking for a breathable cover for my truck when I put it away at the end of the month any suggestions?

inside or outside storage? dont use a breathable cover in snow, the day melt and night refreeze will ruin the cover.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

So we are back and had a great trip, sorry no updates along the way for some reason my phone would not open the form.
This morning I put my truck in winter storage about 15 min away from home.
Truck ran amazing. I'll go day by day starting Wednesday Oct 19 we left our house at 4:45 pm and headed for the US border. Made great time, took us 2 hours.
Going up some of the small hills we have I didn't like the turbo was producing 13psi of boost when I had it set to 8psi so I removed the crappy boost controller at the duty free and put a hose in place. Brought it down to 5-6psi ok for this trip.
There was a motor home parked behind us changing a tire. I ended up helping him break the bead using my air ride and the trailer so he could change the valve stem. A few up and downs and yay they where on there way too.
Crossed into Buffalo NY
Short time later we entered PA
Then stayed with some friends of the family the first night.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Cool trip, was wondering how you made out Lower and glad it went well. Now that was a creative way to break the bead loose!

Is your truck stored on the second story?

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Thanks Doug. Ya just used a 6" socket extension under the tung of the trailer to push the bead. It is the main floor of the barn but there is a lower part. Lots of ventilation.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Thanks Jim
So Thursday morn October 20. We woke up said goodbye and hit the road by about 8:30. We where to drive to Charlotte NC. Truck ran great only issue I had was the motor would heat up a bit going up some of the long grades in West Virginia. We where cruising at 65mph by the top of some hills we backed down to 55mph. Lots of power tho and the truck was very comfortable. Longest single run we did was 3.5hrs doing 65mph, We had enough fuel for 4.5hrs but I needed a stretch. I see cruise control in the future. We made it to our camp site by 8:00pm, GPS said 14hrs of moving time since we left home and 790mi. We camped just down from Zmax drag strip gates where open so we walked up and checked it out.

Very nice! I'm glad it all went well. How'd the North Carolinians like the truck? That looks like a very nice barn you have your truck stored in. Have any pics of the outside?

They seemed to really like it, everyone I talked too Saturday knew about it. Yes the barn is nice and clean he has been doing winter storage for 15 years. Sorry no pic of the outside.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Friday October 21st I had met some ppl camping near us and asked if I could tag along to the show. So 7:00 am we drove up the street to the show. First pic is where my truck sat Friday with our new friends beside us pic 2&3. She drives the burb everyday. No sooner had I shut the truck off, Keith (Strider621) was saying hi He was helping out at his buddys booth "Tommy's pickup parts". The last pic is a guy Bruce who was camping across from us. He drives and drag races this, best time 8.30 @ 143mph.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

There was lots to see I'll just share some of the more interesting things. Supercharged Bug motor sounded angry. Also found this cool way to keep the tailgate shut on a old chev. Then got a great shot leaving the show for the day. The main show is Saturday time to go clean all the bug guts off the truck

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Man I wish I knew you were here in the Carolinas. I'd loved to had met up with ya. I've seen the Suburban before and it's pretty neat. Talked to the guy who built the Tudor. He's a pistol. He was driving a 64 or 65 two door chevy wagon when I talked to him. Cool pics. Be safe.
