Before I painted my firewall I removed this little ID plate. I've been soaking it in vinegar for the past couple days and gave it a quick scrub with some steel wool, it removed all the rust and dirt very well, looks almost like new.

Do you have a source for the proper rivets ?

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

So here it is, my friend that is an industrial painter ordered it for me as this paint isn't available to the public. It's cloverdales industrial speed enamel that was custom mixed to match the original glenwood green that still remained on the covered part of the gas filler. He has painted many trucks with this and had amazing results, really tough stuff.[/QUOTE]

Looks like a good match !

I have ones that are kinda close to the originals, if I can't find the right ones I'll just use what I have.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Hey everyone, I've been busy with end of the semester exams for the past two weeks, and I just wrote the last one yesterday. So the progress continued again today. 60-62 trucks had two different styles of clutch return spring for some reason. Mine had this style, which interfered with the clutch master cylinder linkage.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

The reason I needed a new one is because the old one was kinda messed up, at some point in the trucks life the arm broke and someone bolted a piece of metal to the two pieces to hold them together.
I've been working on something big for the past month or so, in the next day or so it should be finished up and I'll post some pics of it for you guys to see

Oh and I forgot to include this Chrome horn I just picked at a garage sale for $10, from some kind of 70's semi truck. It's super loud!

No school today so I got to work on the truck. But first I did some rust repair to a door for my dads suburban, here is the door with both the bottom corners cut off.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

And here is the big thing I've been working on for the past while, a bracket to add a power steering pump to the 261. This took a good bit of time to design and lots of time to build with trial and error. But now I think I've finally perfected it. The bracket itself uses bolts from the water pump, thermostat housing, exhaust/intake manifolds, and one head bolt, all of it is made of 3/16 plate. I have to say it's way stronger than it needs to be, This bracket could easily support the weight of the engine of it had to.

Another view, you can see that it shares a bolt with the intake/exhaust manifolds.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Then I basically made two steel tabs and bolted them to the front and back of the pump, I then welded these tabs to the main bracket. This is the point at which it will pivot. I still need to make another piece with a curved elongated hole that allows the pump to have adjustment.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Now I know some people will say that you can't drive a ps pump off of the same belt as everything else, but I see otherwise. Since the ps pump will take the most effort to drive I mounted up high in a way that it will have lots of belt contact, plus both the pump and alternator will be adjustable so I will be able to get the belt very tight, so I see absolutely no reason the pump will slip. As far as the alternator goes, it doesn't have a lot of belt wrap but it should still easily be enough since an alternator drives much easier than a ps pump. Here is a thread where someone did power steering on a 235 with a one belt system and it worked out just fine for them, and there pump wasn't even adjustable. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=657913
