Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.

Yep that was some old growth timber there. Back then that was about all they cut for lumber.........it made for much better lumber than what we have available today. That truck in the middle has 5 logs on it, and it is a load.

Here's another one during the eruption. I'll just go ahead and assume that's a 60-66 there far ahead to the left:

I remember that day well.......May 18th 1980. We didn't get that much ash up here, but enough to make a mess.

That pic of Maurice J. Sopp Chevrolet has got to be from the 30's but it is so crisp and clear.

I'm surprised the parking paint is yellow rather than red.
I would think that Rambler would be worthy of a parking ticket being so close to the fire hydrant. Also, there's a parking meter next to the car in front of the Rambler, but no meter next to the Rambler.

I love to try and find the updated google map shot of these scenes. took a bit of digging but found out that the Great River Road Iowa sign - that campaign still exists with it's own web site. Shop truck says main st and the street sign is court st. Only one US highway ending in 4 (US 34) crosses in to Illinois (sign in back ground with another for a toll bridge.

I am betting this is the Corner of Main and Court Streets in Burlington, Ia

Sadly nothing is there now.

Yeah, Kinda fun flying around on google maps locating landmarks past and present. I think you are spot on with your guess at the exact intersection. The brick building is there as is the old post in front which was bearing the Illinois sign (see pic). If you back up the street a bit, you can spot the fireplug situated next to an old post base which would be the one that had the Court street sign.
