Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
We got home last night after a 12 hour marathon drive. We were both looking forward to sleeping in our own beds. The truck ran great, but not flawlessly. It was an outstanding way to do a shakedown cruise. No big problems, never took a tool out of the bag. It has a shake in the front suspension which has never been rebuilt. I had planned to do that this coming winter. It comes and goes, usually around 45-55, sometimes again around 65. Nothing some new bushings and rod ends won't cure. It used some oil, some was leaked, some probably burnt, but not enough to notice in the exhaust. It also lost some coolant but I couldn't find a leak anywhere. I know the cap lifted, but it never got hot. New cap, but maybe it's a bad one. I mentioned before the windshield leaks and wipers chatter. Outside of those items we never had a problem.
1607 miles, over 100 gallons of gas (averaged 14.8 mpg yesterday driving 70 mph the entire time), listening to either the wind and exhaust note or some tunes, whichever fit our mood. Great friends, great food, great ride, great weather, great fun. Now my girls are jealous their brother got to learn to shoot so they both want to go now. I can't wait to do it again. Time for some pics. Glamour shot... One of the first big bridge crossings of the Mississippi Welcome to MO. Saw this rig going into St Louis. Some kind of Bronco conversion, or maybe crewcab conversion. Kind of different. Had a soft top up front, hard top in back I think. Our first stop in St Louis, parking down at the riverfront. The water was a bit high. Lower level of the parking garage was flooded. You can see a sign in the water in front of the truck. Of course we went to the arch. A couple views from up top. Double arches... After this we had lunch downtown, walked around, then headed out to my friends place. We came back to St Louis the next day to eat at one of the top rated BBQ joints in the city, Pappys Smokehouse. It was excellent, I highly recommend it. Then we went to Anheuser Busch to take the tour. On the way out... The next morning we did some shooting. I have a couple rifles, but don't hunt or shoot regularly. So this was really the first time my son got to learn to shoot. Damon is a certified instructor and shoots in the cowboy shooting competitions. We started small with a .22 lever action. Donovan liked it so much that he went back to it later and wants to buy one now. Then we shot some hand guns, starting with a Walther P22 auto. Then a .38 revolver and finally a 9mm auto. He did real well with all of them, must be all those video games . We worked up to the one every gamer wants to try, the AK-47. (its not fully auto, not allowed in IL) But that's not all. Far from it. This little popper was built by Damon and has the same bore size as a golf ball. It goes BOOM! We both did a bunch of riding on the ATV's (Donovan) and dirt bikes (me, which I discovered I really really like). There was a party celebrating Damons son graduating from high school and for a house warming because they are now officially moved out of the city. I met lots of good people, drank some beer, ate way too much food, stayed up way too late BS'ing and had the best time I can remember in a long while. Sunday morning we BS'ed some more (2 day party) ate a huge breakfast and hit the road. Lots of gas, oil and water later, the truck was fantastic and is back in its stall. As you can see, this truck was built for driving. No trailer queen here. If you have a car or truck you love, and a friend or family member to share it with, don't hesitate, get that damn thing out of the garage and drive the hell out of it. You will not regret it.

I had my share of doubts, but figured I could handle any problems that came up.
A loud BLAST indeed. His first cannon was made from a piece of shotgun barrel found in a barn pile of scrap. He has a few, this one is the biggest. Quote:

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Yep, just need to be careful and not do stupid stuff and it will stay nice.
It was fun and I wish I could do another one now. Instead I will probably go fishing. Picked up the water pump impeller today and an anchor. Should have the boat running tomorrow night. Absofreakinlutely I'm working on fixing up my diningroom, and getting the boat ready, and need to fix my sons blazer again (something with the MAP sensor is off), and daughters softball twice this week, and oh yeah, working to pay the bills. Might still paint that Jimmy one of these days also.

I'm on pg 14 of this one. I did not realize how much work you were doing on this one as you were working on the Jimmy, somehow I thought it was basically done and you were having it painted. Had no idea you had 2 projects in this stage at the same time. I'm super impressed!

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
When I closed the garage up for the night and there was just 1 dim bulb shining down I thought it looked cool, so tried to take some pics with different lighting and some minor editing. No update on this, I was sanding the Jimmy

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Alright, major update coming. I've been working on this particular thing for a long time and it's finally done. These parts were bought long, long ago in a land far, far away. Well, ok, I got the one thing at a swap meet last year, but anyway, I found the part I bought to complete this project when I was cleaning out the Jimmy and figured I better do it before I forgot again. So here goes... I worked furiously (ok, I got off my ass and just did it) for like 10 minutes to install the new grommet in the valve cover so my new chevy bowtie breather would fit in the hole. And replaced the wingnut on the air cleaner lid with a fancy schmancy one. Why did it take 10 minutes you ask? Well it was dirty so I spent about 8 minutes wiping it off.
On zee engine... As for other stuff going on, interior materials for everything except the door panels are in hand. The upholstery lady will be getting to it in the next week or 2 (maybe). And hopefully by then or while thats being done I will be spraying color on the Jimmy.

I pulled my original door panels out of the garage attic and tore off the covers. I need to sandblast and primer them. Maybe I'll have the upholstery lady teach me how to do the door panel covers myself, so I can get a little credit for hands on with the interior. Diehard DIYer.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Scrub the hell out of the steel, primer, etc. Lay out where you want your skin to be on the panel and sharpie the back of the upholstery. Get some 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Spray the steel and the back of your upholstery. Carefully line up your marks and moosh those dudes together. Slice your crank holes and wrap 'em over. Spray the inner edges and wrap them around and slice to fit the corners. Install and enjoy. Easy Peasy.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Finally got the call from the upholstery lady this morning. So I ran out (seriously) and pulled the seat, arm rests and dash pad out of the truck. Got the visors out of the parts pile and got it all delivered with the new materials. She will get the seat frames off and leave them for me to pick up so I can clean up the welds and paint them black. Spent about half an hour talking about the details and design. She said it was no problem if I wanted to do some things myself and would guide me as needed. Gotta love small towns and how people will take the time to work with you.
Can't wait to get this done. Been waiting a long time. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I got the new cable for the driver side seat bracket that releases the back when the bottom is folded forward. And I have most of my welds on the brackets cleaned up. Just about ready to spray them. I stopped by to check the seat progress and she was working on the center arm rest part. It's looking good. And the color is a brighter version of the turquoise I had, with a bit of gloss to it and it's gonna brighten up the interior a little I think. Probably won't be done until next week some time.

Sneak peak of my own upholstery work. Gail showed me how to do it and get the corners right. Not bad if I do say so my self.
Driver side of the seat is about done. I don't know if she'll get the other side done before the weekend.
