Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

Shop time has been few and far between lately. Grass is growing like crazy which means yard work.

Both of my boy are aspiring to be motocross stars, so we have been spending a lot of time at the track. I can't complain........sure is fun watching them learn.

Crazy kids.....

I have been doing a little tinkering as time allows. I got my fuel pressure regulator mounted to the firewall and got all the lines ran.

Yesterday I spent a little time rigging up a temporary radiator support and we fired up the SBC for the first time in the updated chassis.

Click the picture below to hear it run.

your temp rad support looks better than some "finished" trucks I have seen. ask chaddude to post a picture of his homies truck he picked up in hutch with an "LS" (it was a 4.8) and welding glove/bungee cord rad mount.

looks beautiful and well thought out as always!

Looks great! How do you like having the radio under the seat like that? Do you use a remote or is it easy enough to get to while driving?

I have a remote, but 95% of the time it is just hooked to my phone and I am playing music off of that. I can adjust volume right on the phone as it is sitting on the seat.

If I was to do it again I would put it behind the speaker grill or in the glove box.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

It has been a busy couple of weeks. I had mentioned spending a bunch of time at the MX track with my boys. Well sitting and watching was driving me nuts.

I bought my old race bike back from my brother in law and started riding again!

Good times......

Despite that I was able to spend 5 hours in the shop this afternoon. I decided to tackle the exhaust. I had my local repair shop bend a couple 30 degree kicks on the ends of some pipe.

I cut the flange off the headers and cut them at a slight angle and was able to piece it all together. It was a slow process. Cut, mock up, measure, etc. Cut again.........took me about 3 hours for the first side. Less than an hour on the second side. Overall I am happy with the results.

Not 100% sure what I am going to do with the tail pipes. I thought about exiting out the fender in front of the wheel, but hate to cut a hole in the fender.

Catching some air there!

What about an exit through the running board?

They are Porter Mufflers. Not sure what length.

I was hoping to get them a little further back but ran out of pipe.

Sorry, forgot to mention you did really nice work on the header mod!

Basically I copied Bob from Minooka and Marc. I may post more details tonight showing the mufflers and flex connection between muffler exit pipe and tail pipe. Since your boards lay flat, you will need a thinner exhaust outlet than what I used. Probably like the first set I tried that are now in the swap meet pile.

Anyway, today I stumbled across a pic of Marc's exhaust tip in another thread.

Thanks for the picture. I have been doing some searching for the perfect rectangle outlet, but I have not found one yet.

I like the idea of a chunk of flex pipe.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

Coach

Just as I thought, my son used Porters on his 55 F-100 attached to a stroked 292 to 331, dyno ed at 337 ft/lbs. And the sound through the Porters is off the charts. Hoping you record the start up through the Porters and share.

What diameter pipe and length of muffler?

Thanks

Nut Case

P.S. going to call my son to see if he has a recording of the start up of his Y-block/porter combo. If so I'll let ya know.

Sorry, just had a thought, do electric cut-out before the tire, and finish out the back.

Just a thought

Exhaust looks good. You could come out above the running board below the box or exit inside the front of the rear fender.

If I do anything it will be similar to Doug or Marc's set up out the running board.

I REALLY though about exiting out the rear fender in front of the wheel....but I really hate to cut a hole in the fender. I love how yours turned out......but I do not think it will look as good with a small 2-1/4" exhaust pipe.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

Spent some time hacking away at the punch list last night. Nothing photo worthy. Threw the battery in the battery box which is located inside the Hamm's cooler in the bed.

Pulled apart the drivers side hub to pack the bearings and assemble the brake caliper. Also doing the final tightening on the ball joints and inserting cotter pins.

I also took a quick video of the exhaust. I already shared it on Facebook.....but figured I would post it here as well.

ttps://kustomcreations.smugmug.com/O...20/i-bBSvHCZ/A

I tried to install my driveshaft. I had this driveshaft made when I installed the SBC. Turn out is about an 1" shorter than I feel comfortable with. Just not enough yoke inside the tranny tail shaft. Trying to decide to have another driveshaft made, or just order a longer TH350 yoke.

Lets see a pic of the battery box. It sounds cool. You probably posted it before and I missed it. I'm undecided but I will probably go with a drop down unit and mount it behind the passenger side front wheel opening tucked inside the fender. I did this on my 48.

Bolted down to the truck bed and the battery box inside is bolted down

That is a cool idea, and similar to one I am considering after my first battery box mounting fail.

I did not want it in the cab anymore. I thought hard about a drop down box, but in the end this was just really easy.
