Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Spent some quality time out in the shop with the truck yesterday. No interuptions. I threw out a bunch of things and sorted through the piles of parts and hung some up on the wall where I can find 'em now. Then I fired it up and let it run for an hour or so. It's been too long and needed the fluids warmed up and circulated. Of course the battery's weak and required a boost. The rebuilt quad must have some trash in it or the float is bad as it now idles really rich and won't idle steady. And with just headers it's loud. The older lady next door came out saying something but I couldn't hear her. I think she was sayin how much she enjoyed that old truck and I should fire it up more often.
I'm slowly getting my shop back to where I can open the door and pickup where I left off without having to move a bunch of stuff out first. That 24x24 shop has been more a storage dump than a truck shop for a lot of years. It's hard to get motivated on the truck when you can't get to it for all the stuff. Sure was good to hear it run again.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Acquired a complete 70 C20 Custom which according to the neighbors has not run in nearly 25 years. The original owner kept meticulous maintenance records until he stopped driving due to health reasons. According to these records the odometer is accurately showing <63,000 miles on the 350 and SM 420 (?).
In two days did the following. Replaced battery and cleaned cable fittings. Diagnosed brake problem, replaced master cylinder, flushed old brake fluid and replaced with new. Adjusted brakes. Drained two auxiliary and in-cab tanks of rotten fuel. Replaced fuel line from in-cab tank and capped the aux tanks (didn't have time to properly flush, replace fuel line and ensure tank selection switch was reliable). Rebuilt/adjusted carb and installed a large capacity inline filter. Changed oil and filter. Replaced plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap and rotor and adjusted engine timing. Flushed cooling system, replaced all hoses, tested radiator for leaks, reinstalled and replaced coolant. Note to self: next time check for full flow through heater coil. Direct wired heater fan as dash switch was inoperative. Replaced both headlights and various park/tail/brake light bulbs. Replaced dry rotted tires and split rims with new tires and standard rims. Lubed front suspension. Cleaned interior of hundreds of insect carcasses but found no evidence of mouse infestation....lucky. Titled and registered the truck with collector plates. Day 3: Drove the truck loaded with three engines in the bed and a bunch of car parts in a trailer over 700 miles without incident other than the clutch started slipping. Day 4: Replaced clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing/pilot bushing/flywheel. I couldn't get the original flywheel resurfaced in the time allowed. Found a replacement @ AutoZone for 59.00 dollars.....lucky again. Day 5/6: Loaded the bed with more parts, hooked up the loaded trailer and drove 1100 miles through a series of winter storms. Day 7: Complied a list of repairs/improvements for the old girl. Replace heater coil as coolant flow first dwindled and then completely stopped around 2:00 am in the midst of a snowstorm. Note: chemical hand warmer packs placed in the defrost vents allow for the windshield to remain clear. A pair in the driver's gloves allow for a semblance of comfort. Install headers/dual exhaust/HEI/tach/stereo. Reupholster bench seat, look into converting to front disk brakes....more to come. I'll make a thread detailing these improvements as soon as I figure how to operate a digital camera and learn to post pics. PS: Had a hell of a time throughout the week. Received at least one positive comment at each stop from folks who appreciate older trucks. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
My daughter and I finished the bulk of our rustoleum paint job today! Not too bad if I say so myself! Honestly, I just love working on my truck with my daughter, and fall alittle more in love with my truck everytime I work on it. Heres a pic, posted some in the body and paint section as well...

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
I brought my 72 long bed home the first week in November but hadn't had the time to do much more than let it sit in the driveway. With some time off over Thanksgiving, I was able to get to the DMV and get legal.
Then it was time for some cleaning. I filled the trash can half full, just from the junk under the seat. The it was off to the car wash. It's amazing what a difference a wash job and some 409 and elbow grease on the interior can make. There's still a long way to go, but we're gettin there! Sunday Ringo and I went for our first ride together.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
First, I did new drums and wheel cylinders all the way around, then a new rear brake line and new MC lines to hook up my new 3/4 ton power booster
Then I used it like a truck:

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Got some glass and stainless in the front. The back window trim package was short one piece...Rather, had two upper "rights" in the package from the mfg. Picking up the right one tomorrow or Monday morning. Rigo will be back on Monday afternoon. Only $50 add'l for having to come back on Monday...a 70 mi round- trip. Nice guy.
Bed goes back on Sunday morning. Still a long way away. But this is just how the timing came together.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Scraped the snow off it, checked the plugin heater, listened to her purrr awhile, and gave her a pat on the hood as I tucked her back into the snow bank for the night.
Did I mention it was a bit cold around here? Michael |

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Decided to clean ALL the glass since I had to razor off the BIG YELLOW TOW TAG that some dogood Officer put on my DAILY DRIVER today. Have a call in to find out WHY it was tagged & can't wait to hear if it was just ASSUMED DEAD since it's not that pretty & always sits on the street (I'm not working right now). I take my kid to school in it every morning though. Apparently they got nothing better to do.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Painted inner grill yesterday, got it put it back in today. Reinstalled the radiator that I had flushed and soldered up. Shined up the upper rad brackets and the hood latch plate with a coat of rusto. Lastly I modified my hood latch to a remote cable and disable the hook from opening with the stock latch. You can pop the hood up but to pull the hook back to open you have to reach behind the license plate. Quick way of keeping looky loos out.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Nothing yet ,but my wife did stop at O'Reileys and got my new radiator since the old one just bled out .Now if my gas tank and sending unit would arrive I could put her back on the road soon. Shes rough and ugly but I sure have missed driving her this week.

I'll try and snap some with my phone after I work out the bugs today. It's binding and won't pull smoothly.
