Re: Frankentruck
Congrats man!
And nice messy bench ya got there! Reading back a bit I can say a tremec 5 speed would be a great trans to get at some point. I have a tko600 in my 66 and have yet to actually test it out but from what I've seen they are smooth tight shifting 5 speeds. Of course now the tko is outdated and replaced.....and more exspensive haha

Re: Frankentruck
A Tremec would be great in any of our trucks, and yet be total overkill for this truck's 283, or even my truck's small block 305. I'm pulling for the successful rebuild of the original overdrive, myself. It's just too cool for a truck like this.

I definitely want a Tremec 5 speed one day, but it won't be in Frankentruck. I'm committed to the 3 speed overdrive and want to keep it that way for the rest of my ownership. Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got home from work to a nice sunset, so I had to snap a few pictures. After dinner, I worked some more on the transmission by attempting to take the bearings off. The rear came off easy, the middle one was a challenge, and I don't know how to get the front one off. Time to research! I did get some lights hung up above the work bench instead of using a cardboard freight flash light. Much better light now, and I still need to replace the bulb on the overhead fixture

Re: Frankentruck
I don’t have a parts washer, so the garden hose, a scrub brush, and some degreaser has dug up some blue paint! This transmission is from a 65 truck. I don’t see any other colors, so maybe that’s original? Probably not.
At least it’s clean enough for me to start putting parts back inside to stay. I’ll be finishing reassembly before I paint. I don’t care about it being perfect, just to look a little nicer than it is now.

Re: Frankentruck
Used a little applied engineering to finally remove the input shaft bearing. I tried renting a bearing splitter, but it was too small. I had to strategically place the punch to fit between the teeth but still have good placement on the bearing. It had been soaking in WD40 for about a week, so that probably helped as well. Next step is to clean all the internal parts then reassemble everything.

Re: Frankentruck
Spent most of yesterday afternoon doing some spring cleaning on Frankentruck and Half-Wit to get ready for the C10 Club Georgia swap meet today.
I didn’t find anything to buy, but sold some stuff and throughly enjoyed the drive there and back. The weather was fantastic this afternoon even though it rained earlier this morning.

Re: Frankentruck
Here in southern Oregon the weather can't figure out what it wants to do. We have snow, rain, and sunshine all in one day haha I'm looking forward to swap meets starting here finally. We are just stuck waiting on actual spring weather.

Re: Frankentruck
We had to move the meet to Sunday because of the rain that was projected on Saturday during show time. Looks like it's going to rain this Saturday some as well. Makes working on the trucks a bit challenging when it's raining

Re: Frankentruck
Started getting a lot of the internal bits cleaned up yesterday just to make less of a mess while reassembling. At the rate I’m going, maybe I’ll get this back together by next year
Edited on 3/31/23 to add: Started a smidge of reassembly after dinner. A 1.25” pvc pipe works great to gently persuade the new input shaft bearing on with a little help from the Tonya Harding 3000. Also got the tail shaft bushing installed with a little bit of help from the slip yoke. Didn’t damage the bushing and the yoke spins freely

Re: Frankentruck
Got to do some “heavy hauling” this afternoon. Also got the tires rotated and balanced this morning. Kinda digging the no caps look. I would need to clean up and paint the lug nuts and hubs before I go to a car show without the caps. I’ll probably just pop the caps back on and not worry about cleaning and painting

Re: Frankentruck
Made some more progress on the transmission rebuild tonight. Maybe I’ll finish the rebuild this weekend? Nope, probably not

Re: Frankentruck
Well, the transmission is just about back together. I’ve got the overdrive related bits to put back on, but all the internals are back in place.
Last night I got to the point of getting the overdrive unit and main shaft into the main case. Finished up at about 1:30 AM and decided I had enough. This morning, I wrapped up the insides by reinstalling the input shaft and mostly sealing up the transmission. While that was happening, I’ve also been helping a friend with the rebuild of his 68 Triumph Spitfire transmission. Apartments don’t like people working on their cars in the parking lot, so we’re doing the swap here. Yes, that log I picked up off the side of the road has turned out to be a great outdoor workbench

Re: Frankentruck
The way that Triumph transmission is made ended up fitting perfectly on the edge of the log. Worked way better than I expected it to at first

Re: Frankentruck
This summer is shaping up to be a pretty cool one.
Still haven’t put the caps on. Looks even more like an old farm truck without the caps, but soon they’ll be back on.

Re: Frankentruck
Good to see you still working hard on your truck! Since I moved up north, I drove my truck today for the first time this year! Had to make sure all the salt from the winter was off the roads!

Good deal! I would say that I'll race you to get them all installed, but my guess is you'll be done well before I will

Re: Frankentruck
Ha ha! I'm not going to get started for a couple days yet, trying to get caught up on things around the house now that the weather is finally straightening out here. Plus there were a small number of parts that didn't get in the boxes, so I won't have it all until next week sometime.
But I'm retired, and probably have a lot more time to spend on this than you do. I'm guessing 2 weeks or so. |

Re: Frankentruck
My friend and I got the transmission swap finished up on his 68 Spitfire last Friday evening. Got some pictures with the two today and figured out that the front overhang from the center of the front axle is just about the same between the two. Wheelbase is totally different though
On the way home, I did a first: chunked the fan belt off Of course, I didn’t have a 1/2” wrench with me, but thankfully my friend did so he turned back around and gave me an extra hand. The one good thing I did was keep an old belt under the seat that although slightly too long, allowed me to get home without overheating anything. Time for a new belt I guess

Re: Frankentruck
Fully rebuilt, lost the receipts
Decided to just use what I had on hand to paint the transmission this evening. I’m ready to have my overdrive back! No, I didn’t paint the bell housing because I’m not swapping that one out. Just going to leave the bell housing that’s in the truck now in place.
