Thanks Lower, that's not a hanger, it is an exhaust splash shield..

Mufflers are on order from Jegs....thinking the run might get too long to make the 90 turn to the outlet. Canning the X would simplify this, though am going to try to fab it out to fit.

The mufflers came in and hope to see about fitting them up tomorrow.

Spring here has been so wet there has been zero planting done. One of my neighbors has his equipment ready to go as soon as the fields dry up enough for working.

can you tolerate an H pipe or are you specifically looking for the x pipe sound? I have read an x pipe makes more hp at high rpm and the h more torque at low rpms. there is a big difference in sound too, the x is more raucous and unrestrained.

here is a great comparison, apple to apple, same car with same mufflers and differing only in x and h pipe.

Thanks joedoh. The 56 has the X pipe and I like the sound. Even though there will be variance on the Burb with much shorter pipes after the mufflers, I am looking to somewhat duplicate the sound.

An H pipe is next up if the X doesn't work out.

OK, the X pipe set up fits.

The patent pending exhaust support system was moved back to support muffler placement.

Welder series header collector flanges were used to connect the exhaust tip and flex pipe. Same for the 90 muffler exit pipe to the other end of the flex pipe. Thanks again to Bob and Marc for the flex pipe suggestion!

One of the pics shows layout to determine where to cut the 90. And I forgot to include the flange thickness, so I had to cut it again.

Right side is positioned and tacked together. Somehow I didn't order enough flanges, so hopefully they will be here this week. Then I can finish the left side.

Once finalized, some of the connections will be welded and some secured with band clamps to facilitate any future removal. Then a couple hangers and it should be good to go.

The exhaust looks fantastic...Nice work. Hey in looking at your pics you might want to add a flex joint closer to the headers. I added mine after I noticed I was getting welds breaking from stress cause by movement. My exhaust system in the 48 is all SS and SS can act weird when heated and cooled. I actually have my tips with a rigid mount. I tied to have them with movement like yours but my tips would bang against the opening in the running boards. especially because like you I kept the tip opening as small as possible.

Just my 2 cents, you know what your doing.

Marc, the tips are bolted solid in the mounts in the running board. The rest of the system from mufflers forward is the same as I used in the 56 and it hasn't had a problem with cracking. Could be because the Pypes is 409 stainless rather than the 303? Appreciate the heads up!

Here is a pic of a really nice one I found today in a thread. this one is a lot cleaner installation than mine.

For future reference Speedway has flanges for around $6 each (nothing wrong with Hortons stuff Ive used his stuff in the past, very nice quality) Speedway you usually get the next day and you can get the gaskets from them as well.
A bit less money and time to get the parts (My 2 cents)

The funny thing is this was my exhaust version 1.0
In 2.0 I added a small SS brace that bolts to the running board mount to keep the exhaust tip from rattling against the running board.

In version 3.0 I added flex joints and I changed the flanges on my exhaust to better match my headers. Third times a charm.

Thanks Kees! It might need a flex pipe between the down pipe and the X. I am going to give it a shot this way so if there are problems with cracking, Marc can say "I told you so!"

Hey thanks Dave! Glad you were able to get through it. It does take time to update these threads...way more than on FB. With your fab skills I am certain your exhaust will be awesome!

OK, it won't win a Riddler award, though it should be good enough for this old Burb.

I don't like the regular style exhaust clamps and yet need to use them on the muffler as the exhaust bends too close to it to use a band.

There are exhaust bands at the slip joint behind the downpipe extensions to make disassembly easier. The butt weld at the down pipe to the extension and the slip joints going into the X pipe will be welded. And the flanges at the flex pipes need welding too.

I bet it will fit like a glove! If it won't work Marc, maybe the Pypes X I used might fit.

Just a side note, the 35 Master coupe I sold just over a year ago is on the road. Owner texted me this. I told him I changed my mind and would gladly refund his money.

So once the exhaust was done I threw the body back on the frame to make sure the tank brackets would fit. Yes, the tank filler pipe will have enough room.

Notice the new shop rollers? The uni-lugs were ugly and a pita to put on.
