Re: 1969 Short Wide

I've been very busy on the body panels. I finished the radiator support, body worked the front bed panel, and started on the hood. It had it's share of Oklahoma hail dents. I used the heat shrinking method to remove most them. Then finished with a hammer and dolly.

I ran out of gray epoxy so I bought a gallon of white Matrix system (got a good deal on a close out at the paint supply).

Thanks Mark. I can't wait either. Had a minor setback with that killer looking "repop" tail gate. I'm not so sure it's repop now, It had some super thick filler. Pics soon. I'm in the market for a "mint" GM tailgate now.

I was looking at your thread last night. Very good job on the body panels. You are making some great progress also.

Thanks KMC. It's been a learning experience for me too. It sucks how slow I am at the bodywork. Come to think of it, I'm pretty slow at everything. I can see light at the end of the tunnel though. Just lack finishing.

Thanks Mike. I'll be glad to be past the bodywork phase. It's been a long ordeal.

Mike, I'd rather be slow and learn than pay big bucks to get back a crap job that will look nice for a couple years and crack and fall apart. You're doing great work, and you'll know what you have when you're all done too!

Totally agree Ryan. Besides, I'm too poor to pay anyone. I went through the paint prison thing before. It sucks.

Thanks Keith. It was a lot more hours than you might think. But, I am trying to use all GM 40+ year old sheetmetal on this old thing.

I'm in the market for a nice GM tailgate now. I have the green one below but it has a bunch of issues too. I'm going to blast it tonight and see how bad it is.

You're moving along quick! I remember doing the underside of my hood.... THAT was a real drag with no blaster. Keep at it!

Yeah it was very slow going. I did use a blaster on the under side braces only, I used a piece of sheetmetal to block the flat areas. I have read a few stories of guys ruining their hoods by blasting them. Heat can be generated by the media causing warpage.

Thanks Eddie. I hope to have some paint sprayed in a few months.? We shall see. I made a commitment to get color on it this year, I'm sticking to that.

I still have high build prime all the panels and begin the long blocking process.

Thanks Steve. It may require some ingenuity to get this gate straight. It's not rusted as bad as I thought, but it has the usual bow and many dents that are going to be stubborn.

Re: 1969 Short Wide

When I got to my gate, I just kept searching for a nicer one to start with so I could have one panel that didn't need 40hrs to look decent. It might be worth buying a really nice one IMO.
