Re: 72 k20 project

Wow I am indecisive haha. OK now I'm looking for some big honkin rubber bushings, possibly from a semi or I might even make some if I can't find what I'm looking for. I'll keep poly for all the suspension bushings, engine and trans I'll go with rubber. I'm afraid I'll hate the vibration transferred through the poly bushings.

Re: 72 k20 project

i know what you are saying. i couldnt decide and didnt know, had a thousand ideas. i still stand behind the idea that i will accept the extra vibes from the way i mounted it to know that it is super tied in. also, it takes a bit of stress off the BH. i still got all nervy and replaced the poly with rubber. i bet mine shakes a little. one advantage of the manual is that the converter pulling an auto down while at idle in gear, stopped is one of the worst times you feel it. you dont have that lug at idle with a manual. above idle they are pretty darn smooth.

i also specifically went with rubber body mounts to try and help isolate the shake more. in the end i know i will be happy with whatever it has since i will be able to listen to the whistle of those turbos just as often as i want!

i agree that poly in the suspension is best. you want those bushings to be stiff.

Thanks! i missed your post for a few days. i guess i left the screen open to long and it never showed up that there was a new one. the electrical on the rearward crossmember is all just to accommodate the trailer harness and the fuel pump relay. there are several relays for the trailer and i will be running the fuel pump through two. just to be extra twitchy. one relay is enough for the pump. if it splits between two, i should never have a failure. if one does fail, the other will still handle the load. if both fail, i needed to stop anyhow!

Re: 72 k20 project

not a terrible lot of progress lately. but i have done some fiddling.

the trans is gutted

there was a bit of ugly in here. oh well, all the shafts need replaced or upgraded anyhow.

the dingleberry that had this apart last was a real beacon of smart... the oil feed for the input bearing is totally gooped full of rtv. jeez

also ordered the resonator. this will be my muffler but is super easy to package and is reported to kill the diesel drone.

the trans guts and case are headed to the hotwash and then paint or powdercoat. the rebuild stuff needs ordered still.

also, no pics but my bed sides are on a truck, headed to colorado.

Re: 72 k20 project

The company name is FTE. this the link to what i bought. there are a lot of positive reviews on a few websites about how well they cut that annoying drone. this is the shorty version and is said to only remove the drone without affecting volume much and the longer one will quiet it down some. guys are running them with mufflers for a quiet ride. i wanted a little red-neckitude with mine, and with twins they are really not loud anyhow.

FTE Rez

i am kind of pumped for the exhaust. what i am planning should look cool. it will probably be a huge pain... whatever

i borrowed a wash cabinet from a buddy and cleaned everything

case and flywheel housing are painted. the bell housing and top cover went to the powder coat dood for a blast and clear so they match the oil pan.

top cover was gutted and i picked up some new forks.

What tools do you need for them? I rebuilt one with a basic set of wrenches, a hammer and punch, and a wood block.

Re: 72 k20 project

there are a few specific tools that make it easier to assemble/disassemble. i did mine with a carrier bearing tool. you can manage fine without the special tools, but they are nice to have.

jeremy, thanks for the offer. i will get that measurement for you. i havent forgot, i am just slow.

yes sir. i am trying to keep a sort of timeline with getting stuff done. i need the bed and the trans to be in before i can do the exhaust. the rebuilds will be fill in when i am waiting for stuff. i did order my bed wood and strips/hardware yesterday so i can keep that going. mostly couldnt handle those bed sides taking up floor space for very long. haha

the color shop called and told me to come get the silver bits. its media blasted and clear coated raw.

had to mock it up on the housing...

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks!

put the top back together.

the rail detents were really gooey and one wouldnt come out at all. i made a little modification to allow a punch through.

i threaded it and stuck a 10-32 set screw in it with a generous dose of blue loctite. i cant imagine that the truck shifted well before. i cleaned the snot out of the bores and detent body and slimed them with some assembly grease. very smooth now.

Re: 72 k20 project

i ordered the bed wood kit last week and should see it on monday. i was thinking about the cross sills and dug the old ones out of the old parts stash. i ordered a new rear cross sill with the wood. i remembered it was gone from tear down.

the rest of them were not well off either. the one on the table is the best of the lot, so i used it as a measurement reference.

i used an offset punch to break these so i could make the channel without back breaking

105 holes later and my forearms look like popeye

these are the shorter support channels. the taller ones all have a couple pieces i still need to spot weld on so they didnt get painted.

Looking great Ryan! I'm curious what the portable parts cleaner was? Was it something automatic or just the old basin with circulator pump?

Thanks guys.

the portable part was that cardboard box. haha. i loaded all the loose pieces into the yellow beast and hauled them to town and stuck them in the wash cabinet at the generosity of a buddy who has one in his diesel shop. its a hot wash cabinet that you load parts on a turntable type of thing. Its nice.

After fighting with the stupid basin type for years I'm tempted to look for a wash cabinet. Almost every project would be mitigated with one, I don't think a guy would regret buying one.

Re: 72 k20 project

if i had space and the cash for one when it popped up, i wouldn't look back. they arent cheap new, but man are they nice.

more stuff!

i picked up some supplies for what i hope is the look i'm after. for a sealer, i looked around, asked those better informed than i and came to this conclusion. Its West Systems 105 epoxy. the hardener is the special clear 207 for a clear coat effect. supposedly the billyBA stuff. time will tell i suppose.
